  4. The teenager at the forefront of England's futurepublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    BBC Sport

The pain of England's penalty defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final may still linger but there is a sense this could be the beginning of something special for the Three Lions. Exhibit A is Jude Bellingham.

The midfielder from the West Midlands made three appearances during the tournament and did not feature in the final at Wembley but continues to flourish at a club renowned for nurturing young talent.

The 18-year-old's consistent performances for Borussia Dortmund have earned playing comparisons with Steven Gerrard, while he has been likened to Cesc Fabregas and Vincent Kompany for his maturity.

England boss Gareth Southgate may have left the teenager out of his most recent squad to give him a rest, but the decision was a sign Bellingham has already convinced his coach he is a huge part of the national team's future.

  9. Covid: Why are UK cases so high?published at 10:35 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

Covid cases in the UK are higher now than they were this time last year when parts of England were under local lockdowns.

Thanks to the vaccine, though, there are fewer cases of serious illness with people needing to be treated in hospital.

But soaring infections - which are outstripping some European nations - are still proving a cause for concern.

Prof Mike Tildesley from the University of Warwick said some basic levels of restrictions, like mask wearing, could be necessary to keep levels down.
