  1. West Mercia and Staffordshire still have Conservative PCCspublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 4 May

We're due two Police and Crime Commissioner results this afternoon, but we had two results yesterday - and both elections saw Conservatives holding onto their jobs.

In the West Mercia vote John Campion, who won with a 100,000 majority at the 2021 election managed to hold off his Labour challenger and was returned for a third term.

His majority this time was cut to 10,000.

And the Conservative Ben Adams retained his position as Staffordshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner with a small majority over Labour.

He was re-elected with 73,500 votes, beating Labour's candidate Alastair Watson who received 70,128 votes.

Afterwards he spoke of the huge decline in support for the Conservatives nationally, but said he thought his record and his "positive message" had won the contest for him.

He suggested the Conservative party should also adopt a positive message in the upcoming general election.

It's also worth noting that turnout in both election was down on the 2021 vote.

  2. Parties watching the count closelypublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 4 May

Counting is underway at Birmingham's ICC and as you would expect, party officials are parading around and observing the count.

Among them is the leader of Birmingham City Council, John Cotton.

There are hundreds of people as part of 40 teams here counting the ballots.

And there are counts going on elsewhere in the West Midlands at the same time.

  3. Bellwether seat spells bad news for Toriespublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 4 May

    Joshua Nevett
BBC Political Reporter, Coventry and Warwickshire

Among the results yesterday, those on Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council are among the more interesting.

The area has long been considered a bellwether, meaning it usually votes for the winning party in general elections.

The towns were electoral bogeymen for Labour for many years - until Friday.

The Conservatives had controlled the council since 2021, and have two MPs in the parliamentary seats within its boundaries.

    Victorious Labour councillors

But Labour gained 15 seats to emerge with a majority, at the expense of the Conservatives.

It’s worth remembering Labour had just five councillors here after the last set of elections in 2022.

With a general election expected this year, Labour will be hoping to repeat its success and retain its grip on this former stronghold.

  4. When are we expecting results to be announced?published at 11:16 British Summer Time 4 May

In case you're wondering when we might start to get results today, the best guess at the moment is sometime from around 14:30.

That's when the Press Association estimates the results of the West Midlands and Warwickshire PCC elections will be announced.

The West Midlands mayor result is expected sometime between 15:00 and 16:00.

But the mayoral vote is being counted at a number of different locations and we expect results from those counts to start to come in from midday.

Counters with piles of ballot papers

Of course a lot of things could influence that and yesterday we saw turnout in the two PCC elections down significantly on 2021.

There are also results still to be announced elsewhere in the country and you can find coverage of them on this BBC live page.

  5. No-win situation for Conservatives?published at 11:00 British Summer Time 4 May

    Simon Gilbert
    BBC Political Reporter, Birmingham

Whatever happens today, you could argue the Conservatives cannot win.

Whether you agree with the tactic or not, the Conservative candidate Andy Street has done an effective job of distancing himself from the national party and promoting “brand Andy”.

This contest has become less Tory v Labour and more Andy Street v Labour.

If Street holds on, it will arguably be despite his political affiliation, not because of it... although the campaign funding won’t have hurt.

But a Street victory won’t stop Conservatives seizing on the result and embracing a chink of light in what has been a dark couple of days for the Tories.

    Andy Street

But the truth is a win would be much more significant for Labour.

Especially if they perform well in council areas that have recently been Tory-controlled.

A strong Labour showing in areas like Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton would send a worrying signal to the Conservatives ahead of an imminent general election.

  6. Friday's results could offer clues to mayoral contestpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 4 May

    Rob Mayor
    Political editor, West Midlands

We can take some clues about what might happen today, from the local elections that were counted in the West Midlands yesterday.

There was a labour resurgence in Dudley, an area they have struggled since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

In Walsall the Conservative vote held up against a challenge from Reform UK.

Also in Walsall, Labour were unable to make much headway into a group of pro Palestine independents.

Turnout in Solihull, a Tory stronghold, was 4% down on 2021, when the Mayoral election was last held.

    The count in Dudley

    Birmingham is the big unknown.

There was a solitary by-election here yesterday won by Labour.

Early indications are pro Palestine candidate Akhmed Yakoob has performed well in some areas of the city.

But we don’t know if he’s been supported by disaffected Labour voters, or people who wouldn’t have bothered to vote if he wasn’t standing.
