More than 1,000 Desertas wolf spiderlings have hatched at Bristol Zoo - the first time the rare spider has been bred in captivity.

The species is only found in a valley on one of the Desertas islands, near Madeira, Portugal.

Twenty-five spiders were brought back by a zoo keeper last year in an attempt to breed them in captivity.

There are plans to send hundreds of the spiderlings to other zoos in the UK and Europe to set up more breeding groups.

The Royal Navy will carry out a controlled explosion of a suspected large unexploded bomb - off the Somerset coast - at 3pm.

A 1km exclusion zone has been created at sea, close to Hinkley Point, where divers carrying out exploratory work for Hinkley C discovered the ordnance.

You can just see, in the distance, a small ship sailing towards Flat Holm island, which is where the suspected Second World War bomb has been found.

Coastguard officers are also at the scene at Lilstock, along with BBC reporter Andy Howard.

We have a team of 10 divers checking the seabed ahead of the construction of the main cooling water tunnels and associated seabed structures. We believe the unexploded ordnance dates from WW2.

  19. Memorable morning for Steven Daviespublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Somerset 357-7 v Surrey

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

    Steven DaviesImage source, Rex Features

It was somehow always going to be this way. Steven Davies, after struggling for runs this season, caressed the ball to bring up his first century for Somerset against his former county.

Tom Abell deserved a hundred but two wickets in three balls from Stuart Meaker then reduced Somerset to 270-7 and the visitors would have been thinking of batting before lunch.

But, Davies found a willing ally in Dom Bess...and the moment finally arrived for Davies as Taunton waited on the edge of its seat. He whipped a delivery through the legside and moved to his century, having shown the Somerset faithful everything he is capable of with the bat.

Davies went to lunch unbeaten on 128...Taunton rose to him and the Surrey players applauded their former player, having seen him bat like this many times before.
