    Police cordon

The Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens is to canvass the views of residents in the region to find out if they are prepared to pay an extra £1 per month towards policing next year.

Mrs Mountstevens said the views will be taken into consideration before she takes her proposed budget decision to the Police and Crime Panel for their approval, on 1 February.

The PCC will be holding public drop-in sessions across the region to discuss the proposal on 10 January at:

    Broadmead Shopping Centre, Bristol

Angel Place Shopping Centre, Bridgwater and

    Sovereign Shopping Centre, Weston-super-Mare

    Quote Message

It is really important that residents tell me how much they would be prepared to contribute to support policing in the area. I am always conscious that many residents are struggling with household bills and I never take a decision to raise the policing part of the council tax lightly.

Avon and Somserset police have renewed an appeal to track down two men in connection with an armed robbery at a bookmakers in Horfield, Bristol.

Two men entered the Coral shop in Filton Avenue at about 6pm on Sunday (10 December) carrying "a distinctive blue Dunlop golfing umbrella" they say.

One man threatened staff and stole cash from the safe, while the other man blocked the front door holding baseball bat.

Both ran off towards either Bridge Walk or back down Filton Avenue towards Bristol.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses and would like to speak to a man who left the bookmakers as the offenders entered.

Bristol's street pastors look after people in the city late at night every Saturday, ensuring drunk people get home safely.

They help clear up glass bottles - and even hand out flip-flops to women walking bare foot.

They say they now need to double their numbers - from 30 to 60 - to cope with the number of people needing their help.

One of the volunteers, Ann Tarr, explained to BBC Points West's Scott Ellis why she does it.

  16. Bristol Energy statement on lossespublished at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2017

    PowerlinesImage source, Reuters

Bristol Energy - the company owned entirely by Bristol City Council - has posted a loss of over £8 million.

Accounts for the period to the end of March this year were published last week.

They show that the loss came despite a growth in customer numbers from 3,000 to almost 60,000.

Previously, the company had said it was on course to return a profit by 2021.

The company says despite the figures it remains on track to turn a profit in future.

    Quote Message

As a start-up business, we didn't plan to get to profit in the last tax year. But we are on track. We've already saved Bristol customers £5.5m on their gas and electricity, and created more than 110 jobs for Bristol residents. We've gained more customers than we expected at this point. As a result we've needed less funding from Bristol City Council than was planned. And we're working with local charities to help the 25,000 households currently living in fuel poverty. The more people that sign up, the more we can do - and the more money we can put back into the Bristol economy.

  17. The sun has risen, behind the clouds at Stonehengepublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2017

    Stonehenge people

It was a misty morning at the ancient stones of Stonehenge, where people celebrated the sunrise for winter solstice.

So there wasn't a lot of sun to see as the winter solstice began.

The significance of this moment is reflected in monuments and rituals around the world.

The very orientation of the prehistoric Stonehenge standing stones is along a solstice axis, with a sightline pointing to the December solstice sunset.

Here are some of our pictures from the morning.

Fundraisers are celebrating a major milestone in their campaign to open a radiotherapy unit in a hospital in Wiltshire.

The Brighter Futures Appeal has now reached its Christmas target of £2m towards a cancer treatment centre for the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

They need to raise £2.9m in total.

Julie Basleigh raised thousands of pounds for the cause, but died as a result of a brain tumour earlier this year.

Her sister Lisa Drew says she would have been delighted with the news.

  19. Bristol Energy posts losses of over £8mpublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2017

    Pete Simson
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Bristol

An energy company, owned wholly by Bristol City Council, has posted a loss of £8.4 million.

Bristol Energy was launched last year, and since then several other local authorities across the country have followed suit.

The figures account for the period up to the end of March and show a sizeable loss, despite a marked increase in people signing up to become Bristol Energy customers.

Last month we revealed the council had ploughed £17.3 million into the firm, which now has over 100,000 customers.

Losing over £8 million doesn’t look like a business success, but there’s a bigger picture to consider.

Bristol Energy maintains that customer numbers more than match their business plan, and that the company is still on track to turn a profit by 2021.

Speak to an Energy expert, however, and they’ll tell you how volatile the market can be.

Despite these figures, it hasn’t stopped several other local Councils following suit and starting firms of their own. Profitable or not, the idea’s catching on.

  20. Sun arises on shortest daypublished at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2017

It happens every year, when the north pole is titled farthest away from the sun.

The sun will continue to rise at the ancient monument until about ten o'clock this morning.
