  1. Patients urged to use A&E for emergencies only, following hospital firepublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 10 May 2018

    A fire engine

Patients in Bristol are being urged to use A&E for emergencies only following a hospital fire.

Eight floors of the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, near the BRI, were affected by the blaze in the early hours of Thursday.

Adult services have been "severely disrupted" and the Emergency Department is now only treating patients with minor injuries and walk-in conditions, according to the local Clinical Commissioning Group.

    Quote Message

We’re extremely grateful to local NHS staff who have responded magnificently to this major incident and ensured that patients continue to receive safe and effective care. Although the local health system is coping well following the fire, the temporary divert of emergency ambulances from the BRI is putting increased pressure on services across the wider area. For this reason we’re asking people to do their bit by making sure that they use A&E for genuine emergencies only, and to consider alternatives such as NHS111 and local minor injuries units for non-emergency conditions.

The abuse of a three-month-old boy by his father and mother has been branded as "horrendous" and "deeply shocking" by the NSPCC.

Ah'Kiell Walker died from a brain injury in July 2016.

His father was found guilty of manslaughter and his mother was convicted of causing or allowing his death.

A spokesman for the NSPCC said the baby was subjected to "appalling levels of violence which ended in his death", and he added that a review of this "horrific case" was expected.

    Quote Message

Watch: The BBC drama is set to film its most expensive episode ever

There'll be a massive explosion in Yate tonight, but don't panic as it's all part of filming for an episode of the BBC TV show Casualty.

The medical drama was filmed in Bristol until a few years ago when it moved to Cardiff's Roath Lock studios.

The filming was due to happen over the bank holiday weekend but filming has taken longer than expected.

It's being filmed at the Road to Nowhere in Yate, which is marketed by South Gloucestershire Council as offering filmmakers, external "complete control over location without the need for a road closure".

The road was originally part of a scheme to create a bypass, but the scheme was only partially completed leaving an empty stretch of dual carriageway.

Tonight's excitement is due to take place some time between 8pm and 11.30pm.

A discount retailer has called out a Somerset county councillor after he cited the brand to criticise social care provision.

Councillor Bill Revans, who represents the North Petherton ward, spoke at a scrutiny committee in Taunton on Wednesday where the performance of learning disability services – run by Discovery on the council’s behalf – were discussed.

In criticising Discovery’s performance, Mr Revans described the service as “a bargain basement bucket shop” and said that "stakeholders were thinking Waitrose – what they’ve got is Poundland".

Poundland has now responded to his comments via its official Twitter feed, stating it is "disappointed" by his choice of words and asking for an apology.

A father has been convicted of killing his three-month-old son by shaking him and immersing him in water.

Alistair Walker, 27, was convicted of manslaughter and child cruelty following a five-week trial at Bristol Crown Court.

Hannah Henry, 22, was acquitted of manslaughter but found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child and child cruelty.

Their son, Ah'Kiell Walker, was cold and so wet that paramedics had to tip water out of his mouth when they arrived at the family home in Gloucester on July 30 in 2016.

A post-mortem examination found Ah'Kiell had suffered a fatal brain injury but his parents had also inflicted four broken ribs and a fractured shoulder on him weeks before, the court heard.

Walker and Henry denied harming their baby and claimed they had found him unresponsive at their home in Archdeacon Street before calling 999.
