  2. Celebrating the new Bristol Pridepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 13 July 2019

This year's Bristol Pride event is the 10th since its current incarnation was launched in the summer of 2010.

It's not the first gay pride festival or event in the city though... in 1977, for example, the city hosted a gay pride event as a fundraiser for the Gay News blasphemy trial.

About 20,000 turned up at Castle Park for the new event on the city's social calendar in 2010, the culmination of a week of film, comedy and music.

Here's how we reported on it...

Thousands of individuals, groups, representatives of community organisations and companies from across the west have gathered for Bristol Pride in the city today.

Talking to our reporters, many said if was just an opportunity to celebrate "being different".

Organiser, Daryn Carter, said: "People come from across the South West, who may live in isolated or small communities and don't feel they can be who they want to be ordinarily. This is a celebration by the community as a whole - coming together."

Speaking at this morning's Bristol Pride march through the city, CEO and organiser, Daryn Carter commented:

"To see all of these happy people come together and have that one day of the year when they can be open and be themselves with others – it’s so special and amazing."

"There’s a really important message behind it that is, unfortunately, still needed today."

    Quote Message

We still see prejudice and hatred and in recent years we’ve seen hate crime against the LGBT+ community rise, so it’s about tackling injustice and hatred and giving the community an opportunity to come together from across the South West.

Bristol Pride says 12,000 people joined the Parade March in the city centre in 2018, to "reclaim the streets and be loud and proud".

So expect some disruption in the city's streets and to traffic today.

This year the two-mile-long parade starts in Castle Park and winds its way to the Lloyds Amphitheatre, taking about an hour to complete.

If you want to join in, organisers as that you gather at the east end of Castle Park from 10am for a 10:45am start.

Buses will be on hand near the amphitheatre to take marchers to the Downs for the main Pride event.
