    Cheese rolling

Hundreds of people have attended the return of a cheese rolling extreme sporting event - held for the first time since the pandemic.

Competitors chased a 7lb (3kg) Double Gloucester cheese down the almost vertical Coopers Hill in Brockworth, Gloucestershire.

Champion cheese chaser Chris Anderson won his 23rd race after a year off in 2019 and said this was his final event.

Wet weather made the conditions slippery underfoot as contestants tripped and tumbled 200 yards downhill.

The sound of music has been echoing across a valley in the Forest of Dean to mark this weekend's special celebrations.

People living in the small hamlet of The Pludds have reinstated the tradition of two chapels singing to each other.

In times past, people representing the chapel in The Pludds and one at Ruardean Woodside used to sing across the valley of Newham Bottom, taking it in turns.

The tradition stopped when the chapels were sold and became residential properties, but at 11:30 BST on Friday, the voices rang out again.

Flagbearers will carry the flags of the four nations, and the flags of the Commonwealth are represented on the cart and the 1980s hit Celebration by The Overtones will also play.

“About 200 people have been involved in the whole thing. The build side, it was probably about 50 or 60 people and then we have all the costume makers, dancers and choreographers,” said Mr Cullen.

    Knitted Jubilee postbox topper

Knitters across the West have been marking the occasion in the best way they know how, treating passers-by to some amazingly intricate displays.

The Downend Yarn Busters in Bristol knitted an intricate postbox topper with the royal crown, orb and sword and Grainne Stables spotted a collection of woollen beauties along the railings near Clevedon Pier in North Somerset

Craftspeople in Salisbury also got in on the postbox topper action and Gloucester got into the action with displays outside the cathedral and in Quedgeley.

Professional felt and textile artist Lucy Sparrow, originally from Bath, even created the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Lunch.

People in Taunton have been having fun searching for the Queen's favourite dogs as part of a new trail.

Local artists have designed and painted 30 life-size 2D corgi figures which have been placed around the town.

A map of their locations is available and it is hoped people will discover different parts of the town as they try to find all of the corgis.

"They're all named after the Queen's corgis. The trail is so family friendly and our young people can learn a bit more about the Queen doing it," said artist and organiser Jenny Keogh.

    Elver eating

There was something a little bit different in Gloucestershire this weekend with the return of the annual Elver Eating Competition in Frampton-on-Severn.

Competitions to see who can eat a plateful the quickest are an age old tradition but these days they don’t use real baby eels but a fish paste substitute - tasty!

This year's winners were James Alderwick and his partner Jess O'Gorman who run a local pub.

Jess' family has something of a tradition of winning the competition - her dad was triumphant in 1973.

  17. Medieval tradition ensures a pie fit for a Queenpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

    Lamprey pie ceremony

Gloucestershire has long had a tradition of sending a pie to the reigning monarch on special occasions and this year is no different.

The tradition began in medieval times and has continued through the centuries, with this year's pie made by Richard Bodger, head chef of the Farmer’s Boy Inn, Longhope.

Traditionally, a pie would be made using lamprey from the River Severn but they are on now the at-risk list in this country, so this year pork was used as the filling.

After being sampled by guests including the town crier and Lord Lieutenant, the pie was donated to a charity which provides meals to vulnerable people in Gloucester.

The Prince of Wales got into the swing of the Jubilee celebrations earlier this week when he hosted a tea dance at his private residence in Gloucestershire.

He surprised more than 250 guests at the event organised by the Prince’s Foundation at Highgrove House, alongside musician and tv presenter Jools Holland.

The event, held as a way to combat loneliness and isolation within the community, saw guests enjoy an afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and prosecco, while socialising and enjoying live music.

Immediately after arriving, Charles sat down with special guest Elizabeth Powell, from Highnam, who celebrated her 100th birthday on May 6.

“I’m so surprised by everything, it's so beautiful here and Prince Charles was so very nice, bless him," she said.

Lindy Hop group, Cheltenham Swing Dance, were on hand to get the dancing under way and Charles joined dancer Bridget Tibbs for a tango.
