    Esme Ashcroft
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Gloucestershire

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire's political reporter, Bernie O'Neill, Progressive Independent councillor for the Ruspidge ward in Forest of Dean said:

"I'm disappointed, we've lost two cabinet members and one who decided not to stand. Really from now on, it's a bit of wheeling and dealing with other parties.

"It all depends whether the Greens will fall into bed with another party, and we'll have to do the same.

"We're hoping we have a good future, and other independent members can join with us. We feel we're progressive, we're non-political. We've got people who have left parties on the left and right to join together for people of the Forest."

  7. Cotwold Liberal Democrat to stand down from council 150 miles away after winning in Tetburypublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Carmelo Garcia
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Newly-elected Cotswold Councillor Chris Twells is expected to resign from the council he represents more than 150 miles away.

The Liberal Democrat candidate has been elected to represent Tetbury with Upton ward on Cotswold District Council.

His candidacy sparked controversy both in Gloucestershire and Salford where he represents Ordsall on the city council.

The Cotswold Tories had called on the Lib Dems to withdraw him as a candidate as he already represented residents on the Salford council.

However, he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service before last night’s count that he felt he was in with a good chance of winning the Cotswold District seat.

“In which case I will resign as a Salford city councillor,” he said.

  8. Swindon analysis: Conservatives feel 'decimated' after council losspublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Dan O'Brien
    Political reporter, BBC Wiltshire

Labour has won control of Swindon Borough Council – after two decades of a Conservative majority here.

This town was seen as a key target for Labout to win back, as Swindon has such form for reflecting national voting patters.

They had a lot riding on success here, throwing huge amounts of party effort, big names, and cash at their campaign this year.

The Conservatives aren’t just “disappointed”, some of their ranks describe feeling “decimated” - not just losing the seats they knew would be close, but also several areas traditionally seen as Tory heartlands.

And the longest running leader of Swindon Borough Council, David Renard, has also lost his seat in Hardon Wick to Labour.

We don’t have the full set of results yet – all we know for now is Swindon is now a Labour council.

  11. North Somerset independents see some early lossespublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Scott Ellis
    BBC Points West reporter

Four years ago, there was a Tory wipeout in North Somerset. Their seats dropped from 36 to 13 councillors, mostly at the gain of independents who led a coalition.

This time the independents are losing ground so far, they've only gained one seat. Their losses have been picked up by the Greens and Labour.

There's plenty of counting left here but so far it seems independent voters are returning to more traditional political parties.

  12. Swindon latest: Could the Conservatives lose control of Swindon?published at 13:16 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Dan O'Brien
    Political reporter, BBC Wiltshire

We’re only part way through the results, but already the Conservatives feel they’re about to lose control of Swindon Borough Council - especially with former leader David Renard losing his seat.

Labour has made gains in traditional Tory areas, and the Liberal Democrats have also won a seat at the expense of the Conservatives.

The Conservatives feel they’ve taken a drubbing for mainly national problems – the impact of Boris Johnson’s departure, of the Liz Truss turmoil, of the cost of living and even of the NHS.

They also feel they’ve had a lack of support from the central Conservative Party operation, given this is meant to be a key swing seat.

Labour have put a lot of stock in winning Swindon, one of their key target areas – but its been under Conservative control for two decades.

The Liberal Democrats have swept the board at the new Taunton Town Council election. Of the 20 seats, 19 went to Liberal Democrat councillors and one seat went to the Conservatives. Those councillors will now represent 14 newly created wards. The council only came into being last month, the first town council for the town in almost 50 years.

Every other town and village in the new Somerset Council area has its own parish or town council, so when the district councils in April were scrapped it was decided that Taunton needed one too, to make sure people are properly represented.
