    Parker's Piece is "for the enjoyment of the people of Cambridge" and the North Pole Christmas attraction provided that - according to the secretary of the South Petersfield Residents' Association.

  4. Cancer Research UK to be Cambridge-Oxford boat race charity partnerpublished at 17:12

    The annual boat races between Cambridge and Oxford universities is to be renamed The Cancer Research UK Boat Races.

    BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management have agreed to donate their title sponsorship to the charity for the next two years. 

    This year's men's and women's races on the River Thames will take place on 27 March.

    A Royal Naval gunner says his time on the Arctic convoys during World War Two, external was the worst experience of his five years' service because it was "so, so cold".

    Jack Millard (above, in about 1941), who lives in Hemingford Grey, said: "You couldn't get warm and if you took your glove off and put it on a piece of metal, you wouldn't have any skin left." 

    He has just received the Medal of Ushakov from the Russian government, external, which is honouring Arctic convoy veterans for their role in supplying crucial supplies to the Soviet Union.

  9. Bassingbourn school's 'exciting' hot air balloon landingpublished at 15:53

    We've heard some more from Bassingbourn Primary School, where staff and children, external watched the single-person hopper balloon - a hot air balloon that does not have a basket - land close to the playground this morning.

    "The playground was packed with children and parents so we moved them all away once we realised he really was heading towards us," said headteacher Sue Brown. "It really was quite exciting."

    "I just walked over to him and said, 'Hello, can we help you?' But he said he'd already radioed his friends, who turned up and after about an hour he and the balloon were gone."

    Children in Bassingbourn were startled when a hot air balloon made an "unscheduled landing" at their school this morning.

    The man and balloon landed on the playground at 08:40 "just as the bell was ringing", according to headteacher Sue Brown. 

    "I don't think he meant to land here but it made the children's day," she added.  

  11. March bridge reopens after leak is repairedpublished at 14:42

    The Town Bridge in March has reopened after a burst water main led to the closure of Broad Street.

    As first reported in the March Times, external, water supplies to part of the town were cut-off after the leak and the road was closed.

    Water was cascading down the underside of the bridge - but Anglian Water said teams had "worked through the night" to carry out repairs.

    The Liberal Democrat former leader of Cambridge City Council, Tim Bick, has described Parker's Piece as "a scene of devastation", after the closure of the North Pole Christmas attraction and ice rink.

    About 40,000 people visited the attraction in the city centre, according to the Labour-run council and that - with the wet weather - left the turf completely churned up. Icebox Entertainment, which ran the event, will meet the cost of the repairs.
