    RAF Lakenheath say the crew of an F-15 fighter jet was "momentarily disorientated" after a laser beam was shone at the plane as it came in to land at night.

    A powerful green laser beam was shone at it, apparently by someone on the ground.

  2. Prisoner handed another life sentence after wooden spoon attackpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2016

    A prisoner who stabbed an inmate in the neck with a makeshift weapon has been given a further life sentence.

    David Watts, 43, stabbed his 61-year-old victim with a wooden spoon which he had converted into a blade, at HMP Whitemoor, external last June.

    He was jailed for life in 2001 for wounding with intent to resist lawful apprehension, and was convicted of attempted murder in 2010 after attacking another inmate.

    The chair of the Home Affairs Committee has accused Cambridge of not pulling its weight when it comes to re-homing asylum seekers.

    Labour's Keith Vaz said: "There are no asylum seekers in accommodation in the whole of Cambridge, Peterborough have taken 146 but next door local authorities have taken none." 

    The Cambridge City Council leader, Lewis Herbert, insists it is doing its best to help.

    I've just spoken to the coroner's service about the decision that's expected today, on whether to widen the scope of the inquest into Tory activist Elliott Johnson's death.

    Mr Johnson made a complaint about bullying weeks before he was found dead on railway tracks in Bedfordshire.  

    His parents Ray and Alison Johnson (pictured), who live in Wisbech, want his inquest to be widened to include evidence about the culture in the Conservative Party.

    The coroner's office said the decision will be sent out on email before 16:00, and it will also announce the date of the full inquest.

  5. Drones will save us money, police force sayspublished at 10:50

    Officers at Cambridgeshire Police, external say the use of drones will save them money because it means they won't have to deploy a helicopter as often for aerial support.

    Armed sieges, searches and road crash investigations could all benefit from drones, which cost £1,000 each, the force says as it trials there use.

    The force says it is considering buying four drones and training 12 officers to fly them, but it will make a decision in the summer.

    Well that's the prize on offer as part of a competition run by the Cambridge-based Raspberry Pi Foundation, external, which has sent two computers to the International Space Station, external (ISS).   

    The winners will have their code uploaded to the ISS and Tim will use it to play music on the computers.

  7. Homeless man jailed for unprovoked restaurant attackpublished at 10:00

    A homeless man has been jailed for 12 weeks for an unprovoked attack on a man in a shopping centre in Peterborough.

    Roy Holdship punched the man in the face in McDonalds, in the Queensgate shopping centre, on 30 December.

    The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to common assault and was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £80 and compensation of £100.

  8. Campaign to stop removal of Peterborough clockpublished at 09:40

    A campaign has been launched to stop the removal of a clock from a Marks and Spencer store in Peterborough.

    M&S say the clock on their Bridge Street store will be removed and re-established elsewhere, due to the shop's re-location.

    A spokeswoman said: "We're really pleased to hear that the clock has been so appreciated by the Peterborough community and we hope it will be as much of a landmark when it is installed on another M&S store."

  9. Drones won't be used to spy, officers insistpublished at 09:12

    Cambridgeshire Police, external insists its drones will not be used to spy on people after some campaigners have raised concerns about whether the machines will impact on privacy.

    The Cambridgeshire force - along with Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire - is taking part in an "open ended trial", external involving four drones, each fitted with a camera.

  10. Decision on Tory activist's inquest to be made todaypublished at 08:55

    The coroner investigating the death of Conservative activist Elliott Johnson, whose body was found on rail tracks last September, is expected to release his decision on the scope of the inquest later.

    Mr Johnson, 21, whose family live in Wisbech, wrote letters in which he claimed he was bullied by Tory supporters.
