    A 100-year-old church organ that went up in smoke, causing a Palm Sunday congregation to be evacuated, could cost up to £80,000 to fix or replace.

    The blower pump overheated, filling St John the Baptist Church in Peterborough with "acrid smoke".

    Canon Ian Black (above) says a grand piano had been brought in for Easter "as there's no way we'd let something like this stop us celebrating Christ's resurrection".

    Tonight will be rather cloudy with perhaps the odd spot of light rain, but most places dry with a few clear intervals later. Staying largely frost-free with a light southwesterly breeze and temperatures falling to 3C (37F).

    Dry at first on Thursday with perhaps some hazy sunshine, but cloud will thicken with patchy rain developing during the afternoon. Southwesterly winds will freshen, with temperatures reaching highs of 11C (52F).

    It might sound batty, but cricketers have a significant advantage if they bat with the "wrong" hand, according to research by a Cambridge professor.

    The study, Hand and Eye Dominance in Sport, external, found that cricketers adopting a reversed stance - right handers batting left handed, and vice versa - are more likely to reach international level.

    Prof Peter Allen of Anglia Ruskin University, co-author of the report, said: "The conventional way of holding a cricket bat with the dominant hand on the bottom of the handle has remained basically unchanged since the invention of the game."

    Supporters of East Anglian devolution are lobbying the government to appoint a senior figure to oversee negotiations, amid fears the deal could collapse.

    Chancellor George Osborne announced proposals to give devolved powers to an elected mayor covering Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, in his Budget last week.

    There are now concerns among local MPs that the plan is unravelling, after Cambridgeshire County Council voted to reject the deal in its present form.

    The BBC understands a handful of MPs and councillors from the East have approached the treasury to call for a politician or local business person to oversee talks.

    Peterborough midfielder Chris Forrester says poor form and injury since a Republic of Ireland squad call-up has seen him drop away from the fold.

    The uncapped 23-year-old was injured before his March call-up to a 40-man provisional squad, and he was not chosen for this international break.

    "My form hasn't been great so it probably pushed me away from the squad," Forrester said.

    This is all that was left of a caravan destroyed by a fire, which also spread to two terraced houses, in Peterborough last night, external.

    Two crews were called to Redmile Walk on the Welland Estate shortly after 18:00, after reports of a large amount of smoke. Nobody was in the properties at the time.

    Firefighters say the cause of the fire was deliberate. Anyone with information should contact police on 101.

    Peterborough City Council, external is flying the flag at half-mast today as a "mark of condolence" for the victims of the attacks in Brussels.

    A minute's silence has been held in Brussels to mark Tuesday's attacks in which at least 34 people died. People gathered in the city centre and applauded after the silence.

    Opposition is growing to devolution of powers to an elected mayor overseeing transport and strategic planning in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

    Councillors from the three counties are meeting today to discuss the issues after Cambridgeshire County Council called for more consultation, Cambridge City Council expressed reservations and the leader of Norwich City Council said an elected mayor was a threat to local democracy. 

    Alan Waters, leader at Norwich, said he signed the deal but had "grave reservations" about an elected mayor, which was the "antithesis of local democracy".

    People taking daffodils from public displays in the town of March have left borders with bare patches.

    Volunteers from March in Bloom, who planted the flowers, have reacted angrily to sightings of people - including a "pair of OAPs" - helping themselves to "big bunches" of daffodils.

    One passer-by told me: "They are there for people to enjoy, not put in their own houses".

    Some flower lovers in the Fenland town of March are proving more light-fingered than green-fingered, after stealing daffodils from public displays.

    People have been seen helping themselves to "nice big bunches" of the flowers planted by volunteers from the organisation March in Bloom, to brighten up the town - leaving bare patches in the borders.

    Volunteers Sylvia and Frances told me the thefts were "disgusting".

    Eastern region Labour MEP Richard Howitt, who was "locked in" at the European parliament for much of yesterday after the Brussels bombings, has spoken of his relief at returning home safely last night to be greeted by his 12-year-old son.

    Mr Howitt, who narrowly missed a bombing at an underground station, said MEPs were allowed out of parliament at about 17:00 yesterday, with several making their way to Amsterdam for flights back to the UK.

    "I walked into my house around 11 o'clock last night," he said. "My 12-year-old had waited up and gave me a big cuddle, and that was probably my best moment of the day."

    Police say a 36-year-old man from Bedford, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder last night, is being held at Parkside police station in Cambridge.

    Officers arrested the man near Caxton services after a woman was left with serious injuries in Sackville Way, Cambourne, at about 21:20 last night. He became ill at the scene and was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, but has since been taken into custody.

    Three officers were assaulted during the arrest, resulting in one being taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital with minor injuries.
