  14. Driver sentenced after crashing car on first daypublished at 17:30

A motorist driving a high-powered car he had bought the same day crashed head-on into another vehicle, inflicting serious injuries on the two women it carried, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

    Scott Russell Brown

Scott Brown, 52, of Westercrofts, Biggar, had overtaken a goods vehicle in his Subaru Impreza on the A69 near Carlisle when he collided with a Peugeot 107, leaving the 70-year-old driver with a broken hip and ribs, and her daughter, the passenger, with a broken pelvis.

Brown, a married father and stepfather with no previous convictions, admitted two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

‪After hearing mitigation and reading references, Recorder Tom Gilbart suspended a two-year jail term for 18 months, but he said Brown must complete 250 hours’ unpaid work, a rehabilitation activity requirement, a three-year driving ban, and must pass an extended re-test.
