    Conservative MP Heidi Allen has said she was "totally in the dark" over Theresa May's announcement that she intends to call a general election on 8 June.

    The Prime Minister made the announcement outside Downing Street earlier this morning.

    "I've got butterflies going through my stomach - I can't quite believe it.

    "It's a strange sensation because I haven't even been an MP for two years.

    "But I think she's probably made the right decision.

    "However, what will it do to the voices like mine representing Remain constituents, making sure we have an involvement in the contents of the deal to leave the EU?"

  2. Lack of services to new railway station 'pathetic'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    It's due to open in the next few weeks, but rail operators have been accused of showing a "complete lack of vision", by not scheduling some services to the new Cambridge North station.

    There will be no direct train from Stansted Airport or Peterborough to the new station and only a handful of services from Waterbeach.

    Julian Huppert, the former Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, says it's "frustrating and upsetting".

    "I spent 15 years campaigning for this station," he said.

    "It's frankly pathetic from these organisations."

    Network Rail, external says it is developing a scheme to allow eight-car trains to run through Littleport and Waterbeach stations.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a deliberate fire gutted a children's play centre on Friday.

    Fire broke out at the Funky Funhouse in Mercers Row, Cambridge, at about 22:40, destroying the soft play area, cafe and day nursery.

    Offenders broke in and cash was removed before several fires were started, police said.

    The fire spread, causing extensive damage.

    No-one was inside at the time, but the company estimates it will cost about £750,000 to repair.

    About 2,500 people were expected to use the centre over the long weekend, they added.

  4. Increase in children given school places in Cambridgeshirepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    Cambridgeshire County Council has released provisional figures that show 93% of children have been accepted into their first choice primary school, an increase of 2% on last years figures.

    It comes as parents complained of technical problems on the council's website earlier leaving them unable to check if their child had got their place.

    All parents have the right to appeal about not getting the school place they wanted.

    One parent has suffered heartbreak after finding out her boy will not be going to his first choice primary school in September, which is just 500 metres away on their new housing estate.

    The Round House Primary Academy, external on the Love's Farm development in St Neots is just a short walk away, however Oscar didn't get a place.

    Instead Oscar and his mum Emma Stevens face a one-and-a-half mile journey to attend Priory Park Infant School, external instead.

    The Round House Academy has doubled in size since it opened about eight years ago.

    The school's website says that 290 children are currently on its roll, with the capacity to accommodate 420 children now the second phase of building is complete.

    Ms Stevens says that the over-subscription "should have been something that Cambridgeshire County Council foresaw".

    "He's not going to be able to go to school with his friends or neighbours," she said

    The council say that planning of school places is planned strategically across an area, not just individual schools.

    A pregnant women is among two people suspected to have been involved in an assault in Huntingdon.

    A woman in her 20s was assaulted by a woman and a man around 14:10 in Sainsbury’s carpark on St Germain Walk on Monday, 10 April.

    The victim received serious, but not life threatening injuries, Cambridgeshire Police said.

    The suspects are described as a pregnant white woman in her 20s, 5ft 2in tall with dark brown hair in a ponytail and a white man, also in his 20s, of slim build with short black hair.

    Peterborough City Council say that "record numbers" of children have been given their first preference of primary school place in this year's application process, external.

    Out of 2,802 applications, 91.5% of children were awarded their first choice in Peterborough, an improvement on the 87.8% of the previous year.

    In total, 98% of children were offered one of the three choice schools in the area; 5% were offered their second choice, with 1% being offered their third choice school.

    Terry Reynolds, director of education, said that the council has "worked hard to create thousands of new places to keep up with demand".

    Parents who are unhappy with the school place they have been offered have the right to appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel.

    Peterborough United manager Grant McCann said he was "disappointed" that his side came away with a single point after a 0-0 draw at AFC Wimbledon.

    McCann's side had much the better of the clash at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

    "I knew it was going to be a tough game," said McCann.

    "But we just couldn't find the quality we needed in the final third.

    "I'm disappointed to come away with a 0-0."

    Posh picked up just one point from from both Bank Holiday games, losing to Fleetowood 2-1 on Friday.

    It leaves them in 11th place.

    Cambridge United manager Shaun Derry has called yesterday's 1-0 home win over Exeter "massive" as his team moved up to ninth place.

    The U's now sit just one point adrift of the play-off places in League Two, with three games remaining.

    "We knew we had to turn up today and put a incredible amount of effort in," said Derry.

    "It's amazing, isn't it? We're delighted that we're in the play-off race."

    Leon Legge's first half header did the damage for United, who had lost 2-1 to Grimsby Town just three days earlier.

    Parents waiting to see where their child will be going to primary school faced a slightly longer wait this morning, after Cambridgeshire County Council's website, external suffered technical problems.

    The error occurred when parents tried to log on to the dedicated area of the website.

    Kerry Moyles, a mum from Huntingdon waiting to find out her child's place, said that it's been a "frustrating morning".

    "I've never felt so sick in all my life," she told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

    "Especially when you're seeing your friends across the country finding out their children's place.

    "You think to yourself 'come on Cambridgeshire, you do this every year'."

    The website is now back up and running - if a little intermittently.

    The county council say that as well as being able to look online, letters are being sent out today.

    It's a chilly start to the day, with figures in low single figures, and one or two of us do have a few showers, but most of us should see a decent amount of sunshine. 

    The further west you are, the drier the day and the more sunshine you'll see,  but you'll still have the chilly north-easterly breeze. 

    The showers will mainly affect more easterly parts, and the east coast, but they should die away.
