  14. McDonald's strikers demand union recognition and 'living wage'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 4 September 2017

    Patrick Byrne
    BBC News

Staff at a McDonald's restaurant in Cambridge want a living wage and union recognition, according to one of the strikers.

The Barnwell Road food outlet is one of two taking part in a strike over zero-hours contracts and conditions. The other is in Crayford in south east London.

The cost of living in Cambridge is said to be much higher than the national average and one staff member who is on strike said he cannot afford to live on the wages he received.

McDonald's said the dispute was about its grievance procedures, not pay or contracts.

Tom Holiday said he was on a zero hours contract and is paid £7.55 an hour.

"We’ve decided to strike for £10 an hour and union recognition. I’m on £7.55 an hour. I’m a father and my son is living in London.

"With the cost of living in Cambridge this wage is just not enough to be able to provide for yourself and provide for my son and his future.

"I often have to make the decision between me eating proper meals and getting the train to see my son at the weekends, and I only end up seeing him once every month or so.

"Obviously we're already on low wages, so on zero hour contracts you’ve got that insecurity of whether you’re going to get your hours.

"Since we notified them of the intention of the strike, that’s when they rolled out the zero hour contracts to our store, so we need to make sure that they make those fixed term contracts available to us and in the proper terms for its employees.”

McDonalds said only two of the firm's 1,270 restaurants had decided to strike and that 86% of staff had chosen to stay on flexible contracts rather than fixed hours.

"As per the terms of the ballot, the dispute is solely related to our internal grievance procedures and not concerning pay or contracts.

"McDonald's UK and its franchisees have delivered three pay rises since April 2016, this has increased the average hourly pay rate by 15%."
