    We now seem to be able to get loo rolls without any issues, but when it comes to flour, that is a different matter entirely.

    As many of us know, getting hold of flour is now like gold dust.

    But one man is doing his bit to make sure we can keep the scones and fairy cakes coming...

    Ray Kilby, in his 70s, is a volunteer at Stotfold Watermill, external in Bedfordshire, and instead of working for an hour and a half on a Sunday during the summer, he is milling now round the clock to meet demand.

    Normally in a year the trust grinds three tonnes of grain, but in two months, that number has rocketed to six tonnes.

    He said the only income the charity is currently getting is through the sale of the flour, and as "we restored the mill to produce flour, its hour has come".

    A head teacher has got creative to raise funds for charities that help children and their families.

    It works by asking children to prepare a meal, snack or dinner and then ask parents or carers to donate what they would have paid in a restaurant to the cause.

    It is raising funds for three local charities: The Mind Map, external, Faces , externaland Bedford Foodbank, external.

    So far about £1,400 has been raised of the £1,500 target.

    Ruth Wilkes, the federation principle, said: "We are delighted to help raise funds for some superb local charities whose work is so vital at this time in providing additional food as well as mental health and wellbeing support for children and families in our community."

    A county council's adult and community services team said it had organised its own supply channels of personal protective equipment (PPE) since April, and said government provision would not have been enough.

    Suffolk County Council has provided about 300,000 masks and 550,000 pairs of gloves to 219 organisations across the county.

    Suffolk Resilience Forum, which oversees the crisis response in the county, has responsibility for distributing the vital kit.

    The Forum's Jaime Hawkins said that quality standards had proved a challenge when there "hasn't been any national guidance on that".

    A delivery of 30,000 eye protectors from central government last month had to be sent back after they were deemed to be inappropriate, the council said.

    As lockdown restrictions are eased, a charity that has more than 100 nature reserves across three counties is reminding people about measures to combat the spread of coronavirus - as well as reminding people about the Countryside Code, external.

    The Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs and Northants, external said that although its sites are still open, it wants dog owners to keep pets under control, and as it is lambing season, on a lead around livestock.

    It is reminding people to stick to the paths, not damage wild plants, be wary of ground-nesting birds and to avoid touching gates and sitting on benches.

    A hospital has made a video to reassure children that although staff might be wearing face masks and different uniforms, they are "still the same friendly team".

    Jenna Lake, pediatric emergency department manager at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, said the children's area might have changed location, but she does not want anyone to be alarmed.

    "We are well prepared to look after you child's health during what we know is a difficult and scary time," she said.

    MP Therese Coffey said people who have lost their jobs in the coronavirus crisis could find roles in the agricultural sector this summer.

    The number of people claiming unemployment benefit in the UK soared last month, the first full month of the coronavirus lockdown.

    The Suffolk Coastal MP and Work and Pensions Secretary told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I think we should be prepared for the unemployment rate to increase significantly."

    But, after insisting "there are a substantial number of vacancies already", she was pressed on where the vacant roles are.

    "There's an aspect of retail," she said. "There are quite a lot of vacancies or employment wanted in our agricultural sector to help in our near future.

    "Those very much need to be filled as well."

    A number of pots of lettuces have been placed around a town, so they can find a new home.

    Penrose Roots, external runs a garden in Luton for people recovering from mental illness and it wants people to take a free pot as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, where the theme is kindness.

    "Treat your lettuce with kindness and it in turn will reward you with fresh lettuce," the charity said.

    It wants people to let them now how they are getting on by using the Twitter hashtag #lettucebekind, external.

    "Perhaps the Roots to kindness can start with yourself", one of the tags on the pots said.

    Therese Coffey said anyone more than five years old who was showing symptoms could now get tested for the virus.

    The government has made increased testing one of its five goals that must be met in order to leave lockdown. Its target is to test 200,000 people a day by the end of the month.

    A woman ran 100 miles around her garden in less than 24 hours to raise money for the hospital which saved her son's life.

    Lauren Buffini, from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, said she took on the challenge after being "inspired" by Captain Tom Moore, and couldn't have done it without friends and neighbours supporting her throughout.

    Ms Buffini raised £3,900 in the 22-hour event for Hinchingbrooke Hospital, where her son was born in 2018.

    She said the hospital was "absolutely amazing and saved his life, so I wanted to say a personal thank you to them also".

  14. More trains running to help with social distancingpublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 19 May 2020

    The number of people travelling on the railways has increased since last week.

    The train operator Greater Anglia started running extra services again... with the number of weekday trains back up to "Saturday service" levels.

    Jonathan Denby, from Greater Anglia, said more carriages had been added so people can social distance, and Network Rail released more guidance around stations, so designated walking routes were now in place.

    The number of new daily coronavirus deaths, external was released by the government on Monday.

    In the East, there was an increase of 19 deaths in the region's hospitals, taking the total number to 3,309.
