  3. Recycling centres appointment-only system 'a success'published at 11:48 British Summer Time 27 May 2020

    More booking slots have become available for Suffolk’s recycling centres.

    The county's 11 sites reopened two weeks ago on an appointment-only basis.

    It said 95% off all slots have been booked, amounting to 28,500 appointments.

    The council said the booking system, external has been a "success" and it is now in a position to release 2,068 additional appointments.

    From tomorrow, car derived vans will be able to access the sites via online booking.

    Charges for DIY waste from households, like soil, rubble or hardcore will also be accepted, but trade waste still cannot be taken to the sites.

    Not all councils have introduced a booking system for their recycling centres, which has led to queues in other counties.

    People queued for up to three hours at the recycling centre at Pitsea, Essex, when it reopened on 18 May.

    The Silverstone Classic, external has been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    The event, thought to be the world's biggest classic motor-racing festival, was due to take place from 31 July to 2 August.

    "Following the latest government advice, we have reached the inevitable conclusion that we will need to cancel this year’s event," a statement said.

    "Given the current circumstances and the outlook on timescales, a postponed event - which was our original back-up plan - in a way that enables us to run the Classic in the manner that you know and love isn’t a feasible option."

    Anyone who has a ticket can either roll their tickets over to the 2021 event or request a full refund.

    Discussions about staging Formula 1 at Silverstone this year are still taking place.

    Knebworth House, external has opened its formal gardens and dinosaur trail from today - but visitors must pre-book a time slot.

    Visitors can book tickets in two time slots of either 11:00 to 13:30 or 13:30 to 16:00. Season ticket holders are also required to book a slot, but will not be charged.

    If you have bought a ticket, you can also use the parkland for games and picnics outside of their allotted garden time slot, but the adventure playground remains closed.

    The house said that health and safety and social distancing measures are in place

    "We want everyone to enjoy a wonderful day out... and would like to reassure all visitors that we are adhering to all guidelines issued by Public Health England and the government," a statement said.

  9. Suffolk Show cancellation will have 'long-lasting repercussions'published at 10:04 British Summer Time 27 May 2020

    Today should have been day one of the Suffolk Show but due to the coronavirus pandemic, along with hundreds of other events, it has been cancelled this year.

    Last year, the county's largest pop-up event attracted 95,000 people to Ipswich's Trinity Park over two days.

    The agricultural show, external is worth millions to the local economy and it is thought to have only been called off seven times in a history that stretches back to 1832.

    Show director Bruce Kerr said contractors, exhibitors and visitors have been refunded.

    "The repercussions for us are going to be long-lasting but certainly with regards to this year's show, by making the decision back in March, we were able to mitigate some of the costs," Mr Kerr added.

    The show was previously cancelled in 2001 due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, and in 2012 it was abandoned after the first day due to high winds.

    A coronavirus mobile testing site will be running in Aylesbury for up to three days from today.

    Anyone aged five years and over who has coronavirus symptoms - a high temperature, a new, continuous dry cough, a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste - is now eligible to be tested.

    However, tests for essential workers, such as frontline healthcare staff, are being prioritised.

    To arrange a test, go to the government website, external and you will be directed to your nearest available site. Tests must be booked and are not available on a "drop-in" basis.

    Companies in and around Stansted Airport, external say business has been hit by the lockdown and they are worried new rules requiring travellers to go into quarantine for two weeks, will hold back their recovery.

    In normal times, about 12,000 people are employed directly at the airport with some 9,000 in the vicinity.

    Penny Stephens, of Inflite Jet Centre, external, runs one of several private jet firms flying executives around the world and has seen business dip by 60%, with three-quarters of staff furloughed.

    "Businessmen won't want to be coming to the UK and having to go into quarantine for two weeks," she said.

    Meanwhile Terry Farthing of London Jet Charter, external expects trade to pick up once there are changes to the quarantine regulations, adding the measure was "like a brick wall to UK PLC".

    Karen Slater, whose Inspire Me Travel, external company supplies specialist holidays such as wildlife and opera tours, said her bookings were down 99% and that the quarantine rules made it "impossible" for her to promote her business.

    Businesses in St Albans are being asked to take part in a survey about the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

    St Albans City and District Council is conducting the research to see what kind of support businesses will need to survive it..

    The authority's cabinet has set up a cross-party Recovery Task and Finish Group that will consider all feedback before deciding what actions should be taken.

    The survey runs until 9 June and is available here, external.

    Councillor Karen Young said: "This survey will provide us with vital information about the current challenges faced by our business community and shape our response to their needs.

    "The Recovery Task and Finish Group will also be looking at a later date at the actions we can take to help community groups as well as residents, including the most vulnerable."

    A local education authority is planning to pay parents to drive their children to school in a bid to reduce numbers on school buses.

    Central Bedfordshire Council , externalwill be offering parents a mileage reimbursement, external when schools return from half term on Monday - if their child is eligible for home to school transport assistance and normally travels on a school bus.

    The mileage rate of 36p per mile is from home to school, and can be claimed for four journeys a day - driving to and from school twice. Schools will be asked to verify any expenses claims by parents.

    The council said parents of children who currently travel by bus, coach or taxi are strongly encouraged to accept this offer so social distancing rules can be maintained on buses.

    Where children can't walk, cycle or be driven by parents, the council will still provide transport in the usual way.

  15. 'Why a county show means so much to me'published at 08:12 British Summer Time 27 May 2020

    One of the region's largest county shows was due to take place today and tomorrow - and in this sunshine would probably have attracted about 100,000 people.

    The Suffolk Show, external on the edge of Ipswich is one of many events to have fallen victim to the coronavirus lockdown.

    BBC Radio Suffolk is helping create a "virtual" show to make up for it.

    The latest statistics showing the daily rise in coronavirus deaths, external has been released by the government.

    In the East of England, there was an increase of 18 deaths in the region's hospitals in the latest daily figures, taking the total number to 3,515.

    The new deaths were at the following hospital trusts:

    ·Anglian Community Enterprise (Clacton and Harwich): 1

    ·Bedford Hospital: 3

    ·East Suffolk and North Essex (Ipswich and Colchester hospitals): 2

    ·James Paget, Gorleston: 2

    ·Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals: 1

    ·North West Anglia (Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke hospitals): 5

    ·Northampton General: 3

    ·West Suffolk Hospital: 1

    The total number of Covid-19 associated UK deaths now stands at 37,048.
