  4. More than 10,000 fish released into riverpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

The Environment Agency has released 10,100 fish into the River Great Ouse.

A total of 10,000 fry – fish that are just a few weeks old – and 100 one-year-old barbell were put into the waterway at Felmersham and Harrold Country Park in Bedfordshire, as well as the River Ivel at Biggleswade, which flows into the Great Ouse just south of the Black Cat roundabout on the A1.

Kye Jerrom, Environment Agency fisheries specialist, said: "We restocked in these locations as we know the conditions for young fish are ideal."

Research by the agency has shown that the reduction in barbel on the Ouse was due to poor fry survival rate and reduced spawning success.

Studies had shown that the survival of young barbel was being affected by invasive signal crayfish creating a lack of clean spawning beds due to sediment build up and preying on barbel eggs.

  9. Canaries' fight for survival looks overpublished at 08:02 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

Norwich City's hopes of avoiding an immediate return to the Championship look to be over after a 2-1 defeat at Watford last night, who in turn have improved their chances of survival.

Danny Welbeck's winner puts Watford four points clear of the Premier League drop zone, but leaves the Canaries 10 points from safety with just 12 more available.

Their relegation will be confirmed on Saturday if they lose at home to West Ham in the 12:30 kick-off, although goal difference means a draw would also effectively confirm their drop back down to the second tier of English football.
