    A woman arrested after a statue of Admiral Lord Nelson was damaged in Norwich has been released on police bail.

    The Royal Navy hero's statue in Cathedral Close was daubed with graffiti on Saturday, according to cathedral officials.

    The attack was believed to have been carried out by anti-slavery protesters.

    A woman, in her late teens, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage yesterday and has since been released by Norfolk Police until Monday, 3 August.

    The Orwell Bridge, external could stay open in high winds as long as a 40mph speed limit can be enforced with more speed cameras, Highways England told Ipswich Borough Council, external’s scrutiny committee last night.

    Simon Amor, Highways England, external’s head of planning and development, said final wind tunnel testing for validation of the new design is expected to last about four weeks.

    But Mr Amor confirmed that while the existing average speed cameras for the bridge (used to enforce the general 60mph limit) could be used, more speed cameras were needed.

    He said: "The design itself hasn’t been affected by coronavirus so we have managed to progress that.

    "We can’t have a lower speed limit if you can’t enforce it, and how we enforce it is quite crucial to that."

    A man has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing on Colchester.

    Essex Police, external said a 33-year-old man was assaulted while walking from Wimpole Road into Barrack Street at about 23:30 on Saturday. He was taken to hospital and later discharged.

    The 22-year-old man from Harlow has been released on bail until 27 July while police continue inquiries and they're appealing for information and are "particularly keen" to speak to anyone who may have seen a black Astra or Mercedes in the area.

    Abbeycroft Leisure, which runs several leisure facilities across Suffolk (and one in Cambridge), says it is "delighted" by the government announcement that indoor pools and gyms can reopen from 25 July.

    The not-for-profit social enterprise says it is "adding the final touches" to its operation and a phased reopening of its centres will take place.

    Police in Essex stopped a driver who was watching television while travelling at 70mph.

    Officers said on Twitter that the vehicle was "swerving into the hard shoulder of the M11" this morning.

    "Watching a TV whilst travelling at 70mph is never acceptable," the tweet said.

    Around 120 jobs are risk at The Nottingham building society as it plans to collaborate with a local estate agent and merge a number of its branches.

    It's joining forces with Belvoir Group PLC - which trades under brands Belvoir, Northwood, Newton Fallowell and Lovelle.

    Branches of The Nottingham that already provide an estate agency service will cease trading next month and operations will be transferred to the Belvoir Group.

    The proposed branches for closure are in Enderby, Syston, Western Park, Market Harborough, Chatteris, Wisbech and Huntingdon.

    The plans suggest eight other branches will be merged.

    David Marlow - chief executive of The Nottingham - described it as "the end of an era".

    He said affected staff members have been spoken to and is hoping some redeployment opportunities will be available.

    A person has been detained by police after driving the wrong way on a dual carriageway.

    Officers were alerted to the driver after they were seen driving the wrong way down a one way street in Luton on CCTV.

    As police approached the vehicle, it drove the wrong way on a dual carriageway before being stopped.

    The driver was detained and the vehicle was seized after officers found it had no insurance.

    The latest number of new daily coronavirus deaths, external has been released by the government.

    In the East, there was an increase of four deaths in the region's hospitals.

    The total number now stands at 4,029.

    • Luton and Dunstable Hospital: 2
    • Northampton General Hospital: 1
    • Southend Hospital: 1

    The total number of Covid-19 deaths across the UK now stands at 44,602.
