  1. Post office raid victim's 'confidence shattered'published at 14:16

    Jailing 18-year-old Paul Farish fro five years after he pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an imitation weapon for a raid on Frizington post office in October, Judge Peter Hughes QC spoke about the impact on the victim.

    He said: "She may have suffered no actual physical injury but the actual psychological impact on her is incalculable.

    "It has shattered her self-confidence."

  2. Teenager jailed for post office raidpublished at 14:03

    A teenager who put on a Hallowe'en mask and robbed a post office, holding a woman at gunpoint, has been sent to prison by a Carlisle Crown Court judge.

    Paul Farish, 18, of Moor Place in Frizington, (pictured) held what turned out to be an imitation firearm to a woman's head and took £100 in the raid in October, the court was told.

    Farish admitted robbery and possession of an imitation gun and was jailed for five years.

    Severe flooding caused by Storm Desmond brought devastation to many communities in the north-east of England and Cumbria this week.

    Here is a collection of some of the scenes filmed by the BBC along with interviews with homeowners, children, volunteers and Penrith and Border MP Rory Stewart.

    Despite the huge challenges, the community spirit has shone through.

    While people in Cumbria try and recover what they can after days of bad weather, world leaders in Paris are trying to reach an agreement about the best way to tackle climate change. 

    Although this week's weather is extreme, some farmers say they've been warning about the dangers of flooding for a decade. John Maguire reports.

  7. Riverside cafe is open againpublished at 12:35

    A cafe that is only yards away from the Keswick river that burst its banks is already reopening its doors to customers.

    The Saddleback café (pictured top at the right hand end of the bridge, and below this morning) is next to the River Greta on Main Street. 

    The cafe's owner Andrew West says the reason they've been able to open, is because of the swift action taken after the warnings on Saturday.

    Engineers have faced major challenges this week restoring the power to thousands of homes after supplies were knocked out by the floods.

    Electricity North West posted this video of a group of enginers visiting substations in Cockermouth to check for flood damage.

  14. Police answered 1,000 999 calls in two dayspublished at 10:46

    Cumbria Police say they answered  thousands of calls as the floods swept Cumbria last week.

    Their call handlers picked up 1,000 999 calls on 4 and 5 December alone. Normally they would expect about 300 over two days.

    Between 4 December and 7 December, they answered 9,000 non-emergency calls.

  15. Carlisle puts the skips outpublished at 10:30

    Carlisle City Council says it will continue delivering skips to affected areas in Carlisle, emptying them when they become full and moving to various locations depending on demand.

    A spokeswoman said council staff would also help clear items, with the householder's permission.  

    Residents and businesses who've had to leave properties will be exempt from council tax and business rates and the council said it can be contacted at the Carlisle Tourist Information centre or by email., external

  16. South Lakes plea for empty homespublished at 10:13

    Council officials in South Lakeland, external have appealed for second home owners and landlords with empty properties to contact them.

    They say there's a particular need for properties suitable for elderly people, families, and people with mobility problems.

    A number of estate agencies around Cumbria have made similar appeals.

    Electricity engineers are checking hundreds and homes of businesses to make sure power can be switched back on safely.

    Repairs to Cumbria's network were completed last night.  But Electricity North West, external says homes that have been flooded will need checks and many many need equipment such as new meters.
