    Volunteers from the Calder Valley team adopted the snail as a figurehead on their boat as they rescued dozens of people from their flooded homes.

    Mick Smith who was one of the rescuers said they realised the snail might have great sentimental value for its owners, and now the waters have receded, they were keen to trace them.

  6. Police release name of crash victim, 82published at 10:31

    A man who died after being hit by a car in Penrith at the weekend has been named as 82-year old Lawrence Cherry. 

    Mr Cherry, from Champion Way in Penrith, was hit by the car on King Street just after 23:00 on Saturday night.

    Keith Curle has reassured fans that he still wants to be Carlisle United manager despite still not signing his new contract.

    It's over a month since the club announced they'd agreed an extension through to 2018 with their manager. 

    Curle's side beat Notts County 3-0 at the weekend - and are now just 4 points below the automatic promotion placers in League Two.  

  8. Prince will be told of Carlisle factory fears.published at 09:54

    The Prince of Wales will be told of fears for the future of one of the town's major employers when he visits Carlisle this morning.

    Prince Charles will arrive at the McVities factory, which is still closed after the floods inundated the Caldewgate area.

    The Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Steve Layden, will be there to greet him. 

    He told BBC Radio Cumbria: "We can talk to him about the need to save McVities, that iconic factory that employs around 700 or more than that. He's president of Business in the Community and any help or advice he could give is very much needed."

    The police say a 19-year-old motorcyclist who was found dead in a woodland near Eskdale was Scott Dores, who had been reported missing.

    Police officers and mountain rescue teams found his body yesterday afternoon.

    He had been reported missing on Friday night after he failed to turn up for his shift at work.

  11. Prince to tour flood-hit areaspublished at 08:42

    The Prince of Wales is touring Carlisle and Appleby today to see areas hit by the floods two weeks ago and meet some of the people affected.

    Prince Charles will start by visiting Caldewgate in Carlisle, where he'll see the area damaged by flooding around the McVities factory. 

    The Prince will also visit the Warwick Road area of the city before travelling to Appleby to see the recovery work there.

  13. Travel: Fewer bridges still closedpublished at 08:10

    Bridges are still closed at Eamont Bridge on the A6 and Gote Bridge at Cockermouth and on a number of minor roads. Otherwise, it's a reasonably trouble-free morning.

    On the railways, the landslip at Armthwaite is still delaying Northern Rail services on the Settle-Carlisle line by about 30 minutes.
