The teenage pilot was seriously injured when the aircraft crashed in the Pennines in 2019.

It is hoped 300 people a day will be vaccinated at the new centre which has started operating at Penrith Auction Mart today.

The site was chosen because of its close links to the A66 and M6.

Amanda Krawczyk was the first person in line to receive her Covid jab.

She said: "Really easy, really quick and easy, a lot easier than I was expecting to be as friends have had to travel to Morecambe, Lancaster and Workington, so for the booking to appear for Penrith was a real surprise."

Across north Cumbria there have already been about 140,000 vaccinations given.

Prof Neil Watson, who is heading the vaccination programme in the North East and Cumbria said: "The uptake for the Covid vaccine has actually been quite extraordinary, much greater than we would normally see with the flu and hopefully we can see some of the restrictions we've felt for over 12 months now becoming to dissipate now and over the coming weeks and months."

A number of firefighters have given up their day jobs to administer vaccinations at the Penrith site for the next two months.

One of them, Sophie Sinclair, said: "I'm glad the first one is out of the way now, and I just think it's really important as a firefighter I'm here to serve the community really so I think it's important we do as much as we can to help during the pandemic."

Barrow midfielder Lewis Hardcastle is forced to end his playing career aged 22 because of a heart condition.

Motorists have been thanked for their patience after the reopening of the M6.

The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 39 and 41 near Penrith after a man fell on to the road from a bridge at junction 40 at about 13:00 GMT.

Cumbria Police said the man was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The road was fully reopened at about 14:25 GMT.

A forces spokesman said: "Officers would like to thank motorists for their patience".

The M6 near Penrith has been fully closed between junctions 39 and 41 as emergency services deal with an "ongoing incident".

Motorists are being diverted via the A6.

Cumbria Police is asking drivers to stay clear of the area if possible.
