Aira Force has been popular since Victorian times and is one of the area's most visited natural attractions,

Laura Ruxton from the National Trust said: "Around 300,000 visitors now come to the site each year and that does have a huge impact on the footpaths."

  4. Hospital staff in second day of strike actionpublished at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2021

A second 24-hour strike is under way involving more than 150 staff at Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary.

Porters, cleaners and catering staff are taking action over payments for working unsocial hours.

NHS workers receive enhanced rates for working at unsociable times such as weekends or through the night, but Unison says non-medical staff at the hospital have not been getting the payments for 10 years.

Mitie, which took over the contract for those workers in November, last week said talks were "continuing" in an effort to resolve the dispute.

  15. World gurning championships cancelled againpublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2021

The world gurning championships have been cancelled for a second successive year because of coronavirus.

The competition is part of Egremont Crab Fair, believed to be one of the oldest fairs in the world dating back to 1267.

The annual event, which is held in September, has only been cancelled by world wars and the Covid pandemic.

Assistant secretary Dan Nixon said the health of participants and spectators is paramount: "Organising an event of this scale where we can expect 5,000 to 7,000 people is a mammoth task and we need to ensure we've got the procedures in place to make sure we can organise a safe event.

"We wouldn't be comfortable with being able to offer a safe event for families to attend and we just don't feel it is the right time to organise such a large event."

Organisers are now planning a "bigger and better" Crab Fair for next year.

  20. Help sought to ensure no end of road for toadpublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

Volunteers are needed for a survey of rare toads across Cumbria whose habitats have diminished by 75% in the past 100 years.

Natterjack toad numbers have declined because more plants are growing on the sand dunes where they live, making it difficult for them to breed.

Dynamic Dunescapes, which is restoring dunes across England and Wales, is behind the project which will see 23 sites in Cumbria - from Walney to the Solway Firth - monitored over the spring and summer.

Eve Mulholland, from Cumbria Wildlife Trust's South Walney Nature Reserve said: "This will help understand how the population is doing.

"We’re looking for people to assess the pools they live and breed in.

"We’re also looking for volunteers to assess the habitat around the breeding areas – is the vegetation suitable or perhaps has it become overgrown?”
