Gritters on the A66 between Cumbria and the North East are struggling to clear snowfall as they are being caught in traffic jams caused by stranded lorries, police said.

As we reported earlier, a number of vehicles have come to a standstill on the A66 including one HGV that jack-knifed.

Durham Police said a full closure of the route from Brough to Bowes, in County Durham, had been considered but "traffic needs to be moving to help the salt work".

  13. Heavy snow leaves roads 'treacherous'published at 11:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

Motorists in parts of Cumbria have been warned to avoid non-essential travel after heavy snowfall led to crashes and road closures.

Police said they had dealt with "multiple collisions" across the county, including 10 crashed and stranded cars on the A684 near Sedbergh.

Stranded lorries have also blocked the A66 eastbound at Stainmore, with one having jack-knifed.

South Lakeland officers described roads as "treacherous" and warned they had had a "busy morning" dealing with "lots" of accidents.

Snow has also caused the closure of Kirkstone Pass, Cumbria County Council said.

The authority described driving conditions as "difficult" across much of the county and advised motorists to "drive with caution, avoid higher routes if possible and allow extra time for journeys".

Its gritters have been deployed to treat "priority routes".
