  5. Askham school signs up for road closure trialpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 11 May 2021

Vehicles are to be banned from the roads outside a number of Cumbrian schools to try and make the area safer, ease congestion and lessen pollution.

Askham Village School is one that's signed up for the School Streets trial, which will see the road past the school closed to traffic for 30 minutes, twice a day, before and after school at drop off and collection times.

The only exceptions to this ban will be emergency vehicles, school transport, and for those people who live on the affected stretch.

A consultation is now under way, and if this trial works, the idea could be rolled out elsewhere in the county.

Vice chair of the school governors Ben Shirley said: "We're doing everything we can to make more safe to reassure commuters, children and staff that this is a safe school to arrive at and as part of these steps we're raising kerbs, putting barriers in at exit points.

"I hope the public will support this school street initiative to limit traffic at peak times."

  12. Public health boss positive on lockdown easingpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 10 May 2021

Cumbria's public health director, Colin Cox, said a further relaxation of lockdown rules is "the right thing to be doing".

Indoor hospitality and household mixing are set to return from next Monday, as the PM is due to confirm the next stage of lockdown easing in England.

Mr Cox (pictured) said transmission levels were very low in the county, with latest figures showing a rate of five per 100,000 a week.

He said: "We saw a couple of days in the last week where parts of Cumbria, Allerdale in particular, was the lowest in the country."

Clearly every time we take a step like this there's a degree of risk but we have to start to move out of this and it feels like the right thing to be doing."

In Cumbria more than 303,000 people have had their first vaccination and more than half of those have had both doses.

Mr Cox said: "What we've seen so far is that the first couple of stages of easing the lockdown so far didn't seem to make a difference to the rate of transmission in Cumbria so I'm still quite positive that given the rates being as low as they are the vaccination programme being as good as it has been, that will keep a lid on transmission."
