  2. Fly problem: Action plan being drawn uppublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 24 May 2016

    We've yet to hear back from Shows Waste Management, which has the permit for the Slack Lane site thought to be the cause of the fly problem.

    However, the Environment Agency says it's working with the owners and Derby City Council to agree on an action plan to remove the waste.

    They are also meeting with local councillors and a residents representative this week

    Flies from a waste management site in Slack Lane in Derby have been bothering shoppers at several stores at Kingsway retail park.

    A staff member at furniture store Harveys told us: "It's a bit embarrassing when your customers are sitting down and you're trying to do business with them and they're having to bat flies away."

    Yesterday we told you how flies from a nearby waste management site were causing misery for residents living in the New Zealand area of Derby - well now it turns out shops at the Kingsway retail park have also been affected.

    Smyths, Hobbycraft, Harveys and Subway are among the stores that have reported a higher than usual number of flies over the past few weeks.

    The Environment Agency says it's working with the owners of the Slack Lane waste site on an action plan to reduce the quantity of waste being stored there.
