    Police have thanked the public for their efforts in their attempts to identify a man they would like to speak to following a string of sexual assaults in Derby.

    Police have had 21 reports of sexual assaults committed by a man on a bike. Officers said they are working to identify the attacker.

    A Marks and Spencer store in Newark was broken into and alcohol was stolen in a burglary last night.

    The theft is believed to have happened at around 20:15 yesterday at the shop in Stodman Street, Newark.

    A window was smashed, which the offenders reached through to steal a quantity of alcohol.

    A 69-year-old man has been jailed for 17 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing three children in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

    Frederick Roy Salmon, from Foxhill Road in East Carlton, was also found found guilty of witness intimidation after the eight-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

    Police have said the victims - two girls and a boy - only came forward in the last two years.

    Nottinghamshire Police have said the trial was "very traumatising" for the victims who had to relive some "very difficult memories".

    They also said: "The offences have had a very significant impact on their lives."

    Salmon was jailed at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday for 13 counts of sex assault and one of witness intimdation

    A crash which blocked two lanes on the M1 southbound at J25 involved a car and a lorry.

    Derbyshire fire service has said two casualties were trapped by their injuries.

    Hydraulic cutting equipment had to be used to release them.

    Highways England are reporting long delays in the area of about one hour but all lanes are now open.

    Headteacher Lisa Turner-Rowe said: "Sometimes they think their lives are difficult and actually it's important to realise there are lots of children who do have very tough lives and need our help.

    "Making children aware they can make a difference means that they'll grow up being adults that can make a difference."

    Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash between a lorry and a car on the M1 this afternoon.

    Police said they were called to the crash on the southbound side, near J25, at about 13:45.

    Two people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

    Two lanes of the road remain closed.

    Nottingham's festive lights were switched on last night in front of crowds of thousands.

    The Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Nottingham pressed the plunger, turning on 4,000 lights on the city's 60ft Christmas tree in the Old Market Square and on the Council House.

    And there followed a festive firework display.

  12. Explosion trial: Defendant 'confessed' to inmatepublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2018

    The prosecution has said Mr Kurd spoke to another inmate while on remand about what he’d done, which “amounts to a confession".

    He claimed the defendant talked about how he could get away with it and that his motive was insurance.

    The inmate said Aram Kurd told him he moved a CCTV camera at the shop prior to the explosion and prepared the petrol the day before.

    He then poured petrol into the basement and used other liquids “to make the explosion bigger".

    The prosecution added that he would only know this if he’d been there as this hadn’t been made public,

    It's claimed Mr Kurd also told the other prisoner that Viktorija Ijevleva was not meant to survive the explosion because she knew about the insurance.

    He said he didn’t want to split the payout with her. He thought he would get a larger amount if people died.

    Mr Kurd and two other defendants deny five charges of murder, five charges of manslaughter and a charge of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

    The trial continues.

    First Bus is to launch an investigation into a crash which saw one of its vehicles hit a bridge, injuring passengers.

    A spokesman said: "We have been informed by the emergency services at the scene that no serious injuries were sustained but five passengers walked away with minor injuries, our driver was shaken but uninjured.

    "We will be undertaking an investigation into the cause of the incident."

    The route on the First Bus website, external suggests that the bus should have turned left off Barkby Road on to Wyvern Avenue, heading onto Gleneages Avenue.

    A bus which crashed into a railway bridge this morning has been moved and Barkby Road has since reopened.

    Network Rail said there is no damage to the bridge but train services were delayed for up to 20 minutes while investigations were carried out following the crash at 11:20 today.

    Police say five people have been taken to hospital and one was treated at the scene.

    First Group, which runs the service, will be investigating the cause.

    A cyclist spent several days in a coma after a hit-and-run in Eyres Monsell.

    The man suffered a fractured skull and back injury when he was hit by a blue Peugeot 206 at about 17:35 on Southfields Drive on 1 November.

    The cyclist sustained "some very nasty injuries" and remains in hospital receiving ongoing treatment, police said.

    Police said the car failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Marriott Road.

    They added that the vehicle also failed to stop for officers a short time before the crash.

    A spokesperson said the car "was not being pursued" by police at the time of the crash.

  19. Explosion trial: Presence of petrol shows 'wicked intent'published at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2018

    Post mortem examinations found Mary Ragoobar, her sons Shane and Sean and Shane's girlfriend Leah Reek died from smoke inhalation and severe burns in the Leicester explosion.

    Viktorija Ijevleva suffered multiple fractures from the building collapse.

    Experts described the destruction of the building as a pancake collapse - meaning an explosion in the basement caused everything else to come down.

    The prosecution said the explosion was caused by petrol and a gas leak was quickly ruled out.

    David Herbert QC said: “Officers found clear evidence of petrol in the basement. Petrol was found in multiple places, it couldn’t have been there by accident.”

    White spirit and lighter fluid also found. Mr Herbert said the mix of petrol, white spirits and lighter fluid shows their “wicked intent”.

    Aram Kurd, Hawkar Hassan and Arkan Ali deny murder, manslaughter, and conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. The trial continues.

    Six people have been injured after a bus crashed into a bridge on Barkby Road in Leicester.

    Police were called at 11:20 today and say five people were taken to hospital as a precaution and another was treated at the scene.

    The road remains closed.
