Nottinghamshire County Council is set to invest in education on recycling in the hope of reducing contamination.
Waste sent for recycling can often be rejected if it's contaminated, either by food or by being mixed with goods which can't be recycled.
This means it frequently has to be sent to a landfill site, rather than being recycled and turned into something else.
In recent years, the rates of contamination have been going up across the county, so the Conservative-led council has agreed a £100,000 project to help inform people about what can and can't be recycled.
As part of the education drive, the council plans to commission training for bin collectors, as well as a wider publicity campaign aimed at the public.

A brook in Leicestershire has puzzled locals by turning a very bright shade of green.
The Environment Agency has sent an inspector to investigate the stream in Countesthorpe but found there are no longer any signs of the colour in the water.
A spokesperson said: "No obvious environmental impacts have been found and we believe it was a drain tracing dye which has now disappeared.”
The culprit became annoyed when the other man took "too long to choose a drink", police say.

Unfortunately for the bar, it's not been particularly positive.
George Hanton said: "Worst shopping centre in history. A glorified food hall with some overpriced coffee shops masquerading as a legitimate retail/shopping outlet."
Hayley Buckby said: "An ice bar is what they have in Nottingham. I would say this is a ice themed bar."
Rowena Summers said: "I have been to the real ice hotel in Sweden and this just looks really naff."
However Adam Tamsett, general manager of Intu Derby said: "The response we’ve had so far from customers has been fantastic."
