  11. Son 'pulled out teeth when he couldn't access dentist'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

    PA Media

A parent in Derbyshire has told Healthwatch England their son, who has learning disabilities, pulled out some of his own teeth when he couldn't access a dentist during the coronavirus pandemic.

The authors wrote: "We have heard a few extreme cases when lack of access to dentistry pushed people to take steps which put their health and wellbeing at risk."

Healthwatch England said it had received an "unprecedented" rise in calls and complaints about dentistry.

It has called for more to be done to understand the long-term impact on people's dental health caused by the delays to care during the pandemic and for the government and NHS to address the problem.

An NHS spokesperson said: "The NHS has nearly 25,000 dentists offering care - the highest number on record - and during the first wave of the pandemic over 600 urgent dental centres were set up so patients could access urgent treatment, but like other services there is no doubt that of course the first wave disrupted some services.

"Dentists are seeing more patients for face-to-face appointments every month, and while practices are understandably prioritising urgent care... if a patient is worried about their teeth or oral health, or that of their child, then they should call their dentist."

The 40-year-old, from Melton Mowbray, said she was wearing a high-vis jacket when a 4x4 hit her from behind and "pushed me along a little".

"It was very scary, but I feel quite lucky," she said.

"My bike's broken and it's knocked my confidence a little, but it could have been a lot worse."

She said she was checked over by paramedics and Leicestershire Police also attended but was not investigating.

She added accidents and mistakes do happen, but urged all road users to be "more aware of others".

In 2007, Ms Lomas was thrown off her horse and severely damaged her spine.

Since then she completed the London Marathon in 17 days wearing a robotic suit in 2012, hand-cycled across the country, raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for spinal research and has been appointed an MBE.
