    Kevin Stanley

Funding to tackle knife crime across Nottinghamshire is expected to be approved later.

It may be seen as a greater issue in the city of Nottingham but the rest of the county isn't immune to the problem.

Last October the county council published a wide ranging plan with a strong emphasis on education, early intervention and youth engagement.

Councillors are now due to agree one-off funding of £300,000 to recruit four youth workers to work with youngsters deemed to be at the greatest risk of becoming involved with serious crime; either as perpetrators or victims.

The new posts, though, would only be temporary - with the cash-strapped council still to identify funding for the longer term.

Mr Walley said the coffins contained the remains of the Cotton family who used to own Etwall Hall.

He said: "One of the coffins was identified as Joseph Green who was born in 1737 and died in 1810. He married one of the Cotton heiresses - Elizabeth Cotton.

"The others are either the parents of Elizabeth Cotton or some of their children but we are working on identifying them."

The vaults have now been sealed up with the coffins inside.

  7. Hospital win legal challenges over treatment centrepublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 22 May 2019

    BBC News

The High Court has lifted a ruling preventing a Nottingham hospital contract being awarded to the NHS.

The treatment centre next to the Queen's Medical Centre has been run by private firm Circle for the last 11 years. A recent bid saw the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust being awarded the five-year contract instead.

Circle took legal action against the clinical commissioning group (CCG) but a court ruling means the hospital can now go ahead with running the service.

    Quote Message

We are disappointed that there have been so many delays to the award of this contract and completion of the procurement process as a result of legal challenges. However, this legal ruling means we can now work proactively with our partners, including Circle, to ensure a smooth transition."

Tracy Taylor, Nottingham University Hospital, Chief Executive

Circle said the process was flawed and plans to take action against the NHS.

“We are obviously disappointed that the CCG has decided to push ahead with a rushed handover which is not in the interests of patients. This does not affect our challenge to the CCG’s procurement process, which will be heard later this year.

“We are confident that the court will find that the commissioners have run a flawed and unfair procurement."

  11. What does Paris' tiny 'twin' make of EU elections?published at 09:10 British Summer Time 22 May 2019

    BBC News

In an ambitious attempt to strengthen the Anglo-French entente cordiale in 1980, the tiny village of Whitwell - population 41 - was "twinned" with Paris.

It was born out of a few beers down the local pub - and a letter to the then mayor of Paris Jacques Chirac - and ended with signs at either end of the village proudly proclaiming the honour.

But with voters due to take to the polls in the European elections, is there still a feeling of vive la difference or is it a resounding non to the continental experiment?

The BBC's David Pittam visited the Rutland village to find out more.
