    Police have confirmed 200 bags of aggregate are now helping to support the wall.

    A further 200 bags will continue to be added by the Chinook helicopters throughout the day.

    Ten pumps from the fire service are removing water from the reservoir, with more on their way.

    So far the water level has reduced by 50cm (20 inches).

    Despite this police warn the structural integrity of the dam wall is still at a "critical level" and there is still a "substantial threat to life" should the dam wall come down.

    The Marple flight on the Peak Forest Canal and the Bosley flight on the Macclesfield Canal have now re-opened, the Canal and Rivers Trust says.

    The Upper Peak Forest Canal will remain closed from Bridge 26 to Whaley Bridge, it says.

    Professor Nigel Wright is a civil engineer at Nottingham Trent University.

    The expert in flood management told the BBC it will take a few more days until the water is reduced to an acceptable level.

    He said: "You can't let the water out of the reservoir too quickly because that can just cause flooding problems downstream.

    "They're trying to get the water out of the reservoir as quickly as they can without causing further damage

    "In the meantime, shoring the dam so it does not collapse."

    Mr Wright said it's "unlikely" the dam will be repaired and is more likely to be replaced.

    He said this long-term work shouldn't stop residents from returning home - as long as the water levels are safe.

    RAF Wing Commander Gary lane has described the RAF's efforts to seal the breach in the dam as like building "a big Lego block".

    It's a difficult task because crews need to drop the stone into centimetre square areas, he said.

    They have to get as low as possible as dropping from a height could put more strain on the dam, he explained.

    Lynn and Matt Lingard have been staying with a family member since coming back from a shopping trip in Stockport yesterday and being told they couldn’t return to their home.

    They said they were initially told they could not retrieve their two dogs Sooty and Sweep from their house but returned to the cordon in the evening and were allowed to quickly grab them.

    “I think if we’d lived any further inside the exclusion zone they wouldn’t have let us do it," Matt said.

    Lynn added: “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get all out pets out. We still have two rabbits there with no food.

    "We had to make a choice. They might be OK, they might not be. It’s heartbreaking.”

    He’s been evacuated from Whaley Bridge and is currently staying with his aunt in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

    He said: “My home and business are both in the heart of Whaley Bridge.

    "As we have been evacuated, we are unable to get into our business to complete orders but we are so thankful for the emergency teams working hard to try to secure the dam which will hopefully save so many businesses and homes from severe damage”.

    A Whaley Bridge resident, who left her home yesterday over fears the dam wall could collapse, has said the last 24 hours have "been like a dream."

    "The first I heard of it I was at work but I tried to make my way home and luckily I know the little roads and managed to get home," said Rosie.

    "It's just been mayhem."
