A 53-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after another woman was rescued from a house fire.

Nottinghamshire Police said an officer smashed a door at The Hill, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, at about 21:20 on Sunday to allow firefighters to get through to a fire in a ground-floor bedroom.

Firefighters helped the woman to safety, and she was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation but avoided serious injury, a statement from the force said.

Det Con Adam Penn said the consequences of the fire "could have been far worse but thanks to the quick actions of officers and fire service colleagues".

A plan to save Ockbrook School in Derbyshire has collapsed after parents said they were not given enough time.

Trustees of the 220-year-old private school announced it was closing earlier this month after running out of money.

A group of parents was hoping to keep the school open but say trustees gave them three weeks to conclude a deal which was an "unrealistic and unachievable" deadline.

    Ockbrook school

A statement from the parents said: "We are incredibly disappointed given that we had presented a realistic and deliverable rescue plan for the school, which the trustees had agreed to, subject to us meeting their deadlines."

They said "we really couldn’t have done more in the time available” and added that the outcome may have been different if they had had more time.

The Trustees of the school said it had held meetings with the parent group as early as possible and the date could not be moved due to the insolvency process.

They said in a statement: “The Trustees appreciate the effort made by the parent group that presented themselves, and would like to reiterate their continued openness to receiving a credible offer that is capable of delivery before 9th July, and would be willing to have further conversations with any interested parties if approaches are made in time.

"Despite being insolvent, the school will continue to operate until the end of term, 9th July, under the backing of the Moravian Union.”

  4. Derby Arena offers Covid jabs without appointmentspublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 21 June 2021

    East Midlands Today

One of the biggest vaccination centres in the East Midlands has been offering people a drop-in service for the first time today.

There has been a hive of activity at the Derby Arena as it allows people to turn up without an appointment, including those from outside the county.

Both Astra Zeneca and Pfizer vaccines are available at the venue.

    Derby Arena

Clinical director Mike James said: "We are running a walk-in clinic, specifically for people over the age of 40 who are bringing forward their second Astra Zeneca vaccination.

"They are able to bring that forward to eight weeks rather than 12 weeks they were booked for, in the hope that we can get more people double vaccinated and get on top of this new variant that is causing so much concern at the moment.

"The Delta variant is controlled by the vaccines, but only if people are double vaccinated."

The arena is open until 19:30 and the clinical commissioning group said it was looking to offer more walk-in availability at other centres on Saturday.

The RSPCA is on the hunt for anyone who could rehome mice taken from a home in Derbyshire after rampant breeding left a woman "struggling to cope" with looking after them.

Inspectors were contacted by a charity that had been approached by the woman in Ilkeston, who took on 17 mice as pets in October last year to help a friend but soon found herself having difficulties looking after the animals.

Nichola Waterworth, from the RSPCA, said 86 mice were taken from the home, though as a number were pregnant the headcount soon soared over 100.

The mice have been shared across RSPCA branches around England and new homes are being sought for them.

We do find that some people have started off with just a few as pets and then they mate. Very quickly we can see large numbers of animals that the owner can no longer cope with, particularly with rodents. We’d always remind people to make sure they keep rodents in same-sex pairs or ensure they are neutered to avoid a situation like this.

Nottingham Castle has officially reopened following a three-year, £30m revamp of the historic site.
