Hospital managers in Devon & Cornwall will review their 'black alert' status this morning as the health service struggles to cope with winter pressures.
Last night it was revealed Derriford Hospital in Plymouth had been in crisis since early January; the entire health and social system in Cornwall has been in 'black' for seven days; Torbay Hospital and the RD&E in Exeter have been on red alert - one level below black - for the past week.
The BBC's health correspondent Sally Mountjoy said: "The majority of emergency admissions are older people with respiratory problems. One exacerbating factor may be that this season's flu vaccine is largely ineffective against the strain of the virus currently in circulation."
