    A Penzance man has left £100,000 in his will to support research into brain tumours at Plymouth University.

    Richard Somerville, who worked as a health statistician, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in 2013, and died 18 months later at the age of 69.

    The organisers of the Fowey Royal Regatta have announced they will no longer be able to host the Red Arrows because of changes to air show safety arrangements.

    The event was a jewel in the crown of Cornwall's tourism calendar, with thousands of people flocking to the event every year.

    On its Facebook page, external, the regatta team say: "After over 30 years of flying at Fowey, last years military aviation authority audit raised concerns over the width of the safety corridor below the display being performed over the river. Our only means of achieving the safety standard is to move the display out over the sea which simply won't be the same."

    The Royal Navy’s HMS Bulwark has returned to service after maintenance work and amphibious training in Cornwall.

    It included the first landing onto the ship by the Royal Marines’ new advanced Merlin helicopter and Marines landing on south Cornwall beaches.

    Based in Devonport, HMS Bulwark is one of the Royal Navy’s two amphibious assault command and control ships.

    Police are urging the public to be vigilant after a 97-year-old man was burgled in his own home, external after two men offered to carry out gardening work at his property.

    Det Con Matthew Burnell said it was a "pretty despicable incident" after the men stole a jacket and a wallet containing £80 from his home on Gribble Mead, Colyton on 7 March.

    People are being warned about the dangers of bogus callers and rogue traders who often prey on the elderly and vulnerable.

    A Devon council has promised to speak to everyone involved before deciding whether to extend a nudist area at Budleigh Salterton.

    The bid was made after complaints tidal erosion had washed away pebbles and made the beach uncomfortable to sit on. Budleigh Town Council gave the idea the thumbs down, but a final decision rests with East Devon District Council.

    Torquay United are in 'advanced' talks about a possible takeover, according to chairman David Phillips.

    Last summer the club was taken over by a consortium of local businessmen led by Phillips after millionaire owner Thea Bristow left Plainmoor.

    "We're talking to people and it's at a reasonably advanced stage, and that's all I can say. I cannot go in public and say who they are, or what they're doing, I just cannot do that," Phillips said.

    We're expecting more details today about the timetable to convert all state schools into academies, taking them out of council control.

    Further welfare cuts might be announced - that's on top of the £1bn cut to support for disabled people which has already been revealed. Public servants are warning that there are no more easy choices to be made - so we may have to get used to doing more for ourselves.

    Thirty public rights of way in Cornwall have been closed for more than six months because they're too dangerous or impassable.

    The wet winter has taken it's toll on the network which stretches more than 2,700 miles.

    User groups are concerned budget cuts are also having an impact on repairs. But Cornwall Council says it's working with landowners and volunteers to keep routes open.
