  4. Devon and Cornwall see rise in former so-called 'legal highs'published at 10:15 British Summer Time 26 May 2016

    There's been a 20% year-on-year rise in the number of incidents involving previously legal highs that Devon and Cornwall Police are dealing with. 

    Last year there were about 2,000 compared with just over 1,500 the year before. 

    New rules have now come into force banning the production, distribution and sale of chemicals that create similar effects to drugs such as cocaine and cannabis.

    Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe has warned against escalating player salaries in the Premiership.

    A substantial rise in television revenue aligned with changes in the salary cap has seen players paid in excess of £500,000 per year.

    "There is a concern amongst the Premiership chairmen that we do need to try to control player salaries," Rowe told BBC 5 live. "Every time we lift the salary cap, the wages go up and up and up, Everybody appreciates that most of these guys have a short time as a professional sportsman and need to earn a lot of money - and their career could finish tomorrow - but we need to try to strike a balance."

    • In Devon, we've had reports of an accident on Station Road in Hemyock blocking the road near Lower Millhayes.
    • On the B3297 between Redruth and Helston, there's a broken down car on a blind bend causing delays. Approach with care.
    • On the A30 westbound near Carland Cross there is a lane closed. because of a broken down bin lorry - there is also a lane closed between Scorrier and Redruth because of barrier repairs.

    The South Western Ambulance Service spent more than £500,000 on private ambulances in the last financial year; almost all for emergencies.

    A BBC investigation shows the NHS is spending three times as much on private ambulances for 999 calls compared to four years ago. 

    The ambulance trust said one of the main reasons was what it described as an unprecedented increase in demand for services, which rose by more than 5% in the last financial year.

    A man who was falsely accused of killing two people in a hit and run collision in Cornwall has told the BBC how his life fell apart and he had to leave his home because of the "hatred" he endured.

    Twenty-seven-year-old Rupert Thompson (pictured) was arrested after his best friend, Ryan Morrish, tried to frame him for the crime, even though he wasn't there. 

    Months later, Morrish was eventually jailed after admitting he had been driving the car which hit and killed Calvin Trevena and Annie Varran, near St Agnes.
