    A lot of them threatened to call in sick, with the term "Brex-sick" being used to describe how they felt.

    Others said their feelings of "existential dread" should be a good enough reason to stay home. Vote Leave won with 52% of the vote. One employer even said he wouldn't mind if his staff took the day off.

    Cornwall Council says it is seeking "urgent confirmation" that the UK government will match EU investment in Cornwall following the country's decision to leave the EU.

    “We will be insisting that Cornwall receives investment equal to that provided by the EU programme which has averaged £60m per year over the last 10 years”, John Pollard, the leader of Cornwall Council has said.

    The Leave campaign had reassured the council that Brexit would not lead to less investment in the county which has a "relatively weak economy", the council said. BBC News has contacted the government, but it is yet to comment.

    Britain's decision to leave the EU has been branded "a disaster for the young people of this country" by the vice-chancellor of the University of Exeter.

    Steve Smith said there were nearly 1,500 student and 500 staff at the university from Europe, while prospective academic staff from the EU had put off signing contracts until today.

    Brexit was a "major issue" for the university sector but the University of Exeter would work to reassure staff and students, he said.

    Leaving the EU is a "fantastic result for Cornwall" and a weaker pound is not necessarily "a bad thing", a business woman who owns restaurants across Cornwall has said.

    "One of the real issues is that we have an import/export deficit, and a weaker pound actually means that we're going to export more because our goods will be cheaper", Melanie Evans said.

    Earlier today the value of the pound plunged to a low not seen since 1985 in the wake of the Brexit vote.

    The chairman of Cornwall Manufacturers' group has said possible import and export tariffs are "a big worry" in the wake of Britain's exit from the EU.

    Eric Nicholls, who is also the boss of Spiral Construction at Helston, said: "Whether Cornwall will continue to receive its EU funding is far from certain, as are the pledges from the Remain side that this would be met from central government."

    Cornwall voted this morning in favour of Brexit, by a margin of around 40,000 votes.

    People in Cornwall who voted for "disaster" Brexit will now be hit by the end of EU funding, a labour councillor for the country says.

    "That funding has given us fibre broadband, a university, superb sixth form colleges, dual carriageways, airport investment, rail improvement, support for farmers and all kinds of business", Councillor Tim Dwelly, leader of the Labour Group at Cornwall Council said.

    He said the prospect of an "economic downturn" would hit the county "hard", putting jobs at risk and further strain on public services. Exporters in Cornwall also faced potential tariffs, he added.

    Cornwall business woman Melanie Evans said she was "absolutely delighted" at the EU referendum result.

    "The EU money has been spent unwisely in places on projects that have gone bankrupt and we now have the opportunity to take control of that funding," she said.

    "We are in a deprived status and we have remained in deprived status even though that funding was coming in so it shows it hasn't worked."

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman who was found with knife wounds has died.

    The woman, who was in her 30s, was taken to Torbay District Hospital where she later died, after she was found outside a property in Paignton. Police have yet to formally identify her and are currently trying to find her next of kin.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said they had arrested a 22-year-old man from Torquay who remains in police custody.
