    A bomb squad team was called to Plymouth after ordnance objects "which appeared old and rusty" were picked up by local fishermen in nets, police say. 

    Local residents in the Sutton Road area were evacuated from homes as a precaution after emergency services were alerted at about 13:45 on Tuesday. Sutton Road itself was closed for a number of hours.

    Officers said the ordnance was removed safely at about 18:15 and taken to a safe site to be destroyed in a controlled explosion.

    The leader of a council involved in £100,000 of transport debts incurred as a result of Radio 1's Big Weekend in Devon has defended extra spending, saying authorities had to make the event "safe and enjoyable".

    Not enough people used the park and ride service set up for the event at Powderham, attended by around 50,000 people in May. Exeter City and Teignbridge District councils said they went over budget by £100,000 - on top of £200,000 already spent. 

    Jeremy Christophers, the leader of Conservative-controlled Teignbridge Council, said: "We’ve gone over budget. It's a shame, but the fact remains we delivered a very safe, very secure very entertaining thing that will live on for generations in people’s memories."

    Police say they are "becoming increasingly concerned, external" for a man from Falmouth who has gone missing.

    Officers said 38-year-old man Glyn Gwyer was reported missing on Tuesday morning after being last seen at the Royal Standard Pub in Flushing at about 21:30 on Monday. Family and friends said the disappearance was "out of character". 

    Police have searched the local area, assisted by coastguard teams and the RNLI. He is described as white, 6ft tall, of stocky build; with short, dark receding hair. He usually wore shorts and flip flops, and may have a red and black rucksack with him, officers said.

    Zoo staff searching for a lynx which escaped from its enclosure last week say they have seen promising evidence of footprints in a 20-30 acre zone where they think the animal is resting up.

    Flaviu escaped from Dartmoor Zoo overnight after arriving from a nature reserve in Kent last Wednesday.

    Owner Benjamin Mee said some food had been taken from humane traps and the fact Flaviu appeared to be remaining in one particular area was "extremely encouraging" because the cat may have decided "it's his territory".

    A car fire in Kingkerswell is being treated as a suspected arson attack, Devon and Somerset Fire Service says, external.

    Fire crews were called to Orestone Lane at about 22:40 on Tuesday after "several reports" of the blaze, which severely damaged the vehicle.

    Police were investigating, the fire service said.

    Guidelines that suspected sepsis in patients must be treated as an emergency in the same way as heart attacks are, "could not come any sooner", the mother of a baby killed by the condition says.

    One-year-old William Mead died from sepsis in 2014 after potential signs of the condition were missed by NHS 111 staff and GPs.

    Melissa Mead said: "Sadly we have been touched in very real terms by sepsis and could not agree more that clinicians need to start asking: 'Could this be sepsis?'"

    Talks are being held today in Devon on how the county council can get extra funding from central government to make more decisions locally. 

    The government has already devolved powers to other parts of the country and a deal has been signed for Cornwall

    It's hoped an agreement can be reached by the autumn, unlocking extra funding for Devon and Somerset.

    Experts believe a sperm whale that washed up in Cornwall at the weekend may be the first female of the species to do so for more than 100 years. 

    Scientists from the Zoological Society of London carried out a post-mortem on the 38ft creature, and said the UK strandings data set had just one other possible female in the UK since records began in 1913 - with this being the first confirmed one. 

    Female sperm whales tend to remain with their calves in tropical and sub-tropical waters, with the closest known breeding and nursery area being off the Azores in the mid-Atlantic.

    A search is continuing this morning for a man in his 30s who has gone missing in the Flushing area.

    The man, Glyn Gwyer, was reported missing at about 20:45 on Tuesday.

    Devon and Cornwall Police are leading the search, assisted by Falmouth coastguard. An RNLI lifeboat has been scouring the coastline in the area.

    Taxpayers are being asked to foot the bill for transport debts incurred as a result of the Radio 1 Big Weekend near Exeter in May.

    About 50,000 people went to the event at at Powderham, but not enough used the park and ride service set up for the event to break even. 

    Exeter City and Teignbridge District councils said they had gone over budget by another £100,000 on top of £200,000 already spent.

    Suspected sepsis in patients such as baby William Mead from Cornwall must be treated as an emergency in the same way as heart attacks are, England's health watchdog says.

    National Institute of Health and Care Excellence guidance urges medics to consider sepsis early on when treating any patients unwell with infections.

    The problem, caused when the body's immune system overreacts to infection, leads to 44,000 UK deaths a year.

    But experts estimate between 5,000 and 13,000 could be avoided.
