  1. Dead whale washes up: 'Magnificent beast needs a bit of respect'published at 10:17 British Summer Time 29 September 2016

    The body of a dead whale, that's been drifting past the coast of Devon for the last few days, has washed up at Red Rock Beach, between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish this morning. 

    John and Pete are visiting from the Midlands and saw the whale this morning. 

    John said: "I've never seen a whale before. It's marvelous and I feel sorry for the thing. It's a magnificent beast that needs a bit of respect."

    A wet start, but with cloud and rain clearing early to leave a dry day with sunny spells. It'll be fairly breezy too, especially over the hills of Dartmoor, Carn Brea and Godolphin Hill.

    It will also feel noticeably cooler than yesterday when out and about. 

    The maximum temperature will be 18C (64F).

    William Mead, from Penryn, Cornwall contracted blood poisoning in 2014 and died after a series of NHS failures to detect it. 

    Earlier this month she made a video to raise awareness of sepsis, and in it said how William would not get to meet his new baby sibling.

    Plans to close three Plymouth GP surgeries have been strongly criticised in a report by the independent organisation Healthwatch Plymouth. 

    It's critical of patient involvement in the decision and the impact on vulnerable people. 

    NHS England says it's gone well above its legal requirements.

    BBC Radio Devon reporter Sophie Pierce is at Red Rock Beach near Dawlish where a dead sperm whale has washed up on the beach.

    "It's a rather sad sight and quite an extraordinary one," she said.

    "Apparently it's been around for at least a month in the sea, it was last spotted off France. As soon as I hit the beach I could smell it."

    Two people were rescued by Coastguard helicopter after becoming trapped by the tide at Whipsiderry, three hours before high tide.

    Newquay's RNLI lifeboat volunteers responded at 13.24 yesterday and stood-by in the big swell just offshore whilst the two people were rescued from their position 30ft up the cliff by the Coastguard rescue helicopter. 

    Newquay and St Agnes coastguard rescue teams also responded.

    A huge sperm whale has washed up at Red Rock Beach between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish.

    BBC Radio Devon Reporter Sophie Pierce is at the beach. 

    She said: "I'm looking at one of the most extraordinary things I've ever seen in my life, and I'm feeling quite sad. 

    "It's about 50ft long, I'm told it's a sperm whale. Towards its head there's the most incredible tusk, which is part of its jaw, and I can see the most delicate hairs that make up its jawline."

    NHS trusts in England paid out more than £1.4bn in medical negligence claims last year compared to £583m in 2008, analysis shows.

    The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA), which handles claims on behalf of trusts, said it was trying to reduce the costs.

    It blamed big rises in claims and legal costs from claimants.

    Lawyers said the costs would not exist if the NHS had not been negligent and accused it of delaying claims.

    • In Bodmin on the A38 there are reports of slow traffic due to an incident near Turfdown Road, and near the A30 junction there is a broken down vehicle near Lostwithiel Roundabout. Motorists are advised to approach with caution
    • The Torpoint Ferry has a reduced service due to a technical fault, there are delays up to 30 minutes at present 
    • On GWR trains there are delays and some cancellations between Truro and Falmouth Docks due to a broken down train
    • In Saltash on the A38 Plymouth-bound there are reports of queuing traffic at Trerulefoot Roundabout
    • In Plympton there is slow traffic on the B3416 Deep Lane and Sandy Road in both directions around the Ridgeway junction in the roadworks area

    A 30ft sperm whale has washed up at Red Rock Beach, between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish. 

    Teignbridge Council is on site dealing with the animal.

    The body of a dead sperm whale which has been drifting past the coast of Devon for the last few days is expected to come ashore somewhere along Dawlish Warren this morning. 

    Coastguards have been tracking the 30ft whale, which people had mistaken for an upturned boat.

    They're advising members of the public not to approach the whale if they spot it on the beach as it's badly decomposed.

    In July a whale stranded on Perranporth beach in Cornwall died on the shore.

    The NHS in the South West has been hit with soaring bills for negligence claims by patients.

    Bills for most trusts have more than doubled since 2008 analysis by the BBC has revealed.

    In Plymouth, the cost rose from £5m to £10.9m.

    The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust saw its bills rise from £1.9m to £7.5m - a rise of nearly four times.

    The government is also concerned and is planning to cap lawyers’ fees.
