    Two-time Olympic champion Stanning (pictured right) has announced her retirement from rowing, ending her all-conquering partnership with Penzance's Helen Glover (left).

    Helen tweeted, external that the 31-year-old British Army major and teammate of six years had been her "voice of logic, a driving force, my friend, and my maid of honour".

    Two people from Devon killed in a road collision in Somerset died after a van apparently "crossed the centre of the road" at a sweeping right-hand bend on the A303, police say.

    Robert and Brenda Newton, both 72 and from the Ottery St Mary area of Devon, died at the scene of the crash near Buckland St Mary on 31 October. 

    The van driver, who was travelling in the opposite direction to the Newtons, was treated at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital but released shortly afterwards, police said.

    Flybe have had a long struggle with the dreaded "external factors", such as the exchange rate. But they wake up this morning to an unexpected shift in that headwind. 

    The dollar has suddenly weakened, even against sterling, so today is like the morning after the EU Referendum in reverse.

    For months, the weak pound has hampered them: aviation fuel is priced in dollars, and so are the loans on aircraft that Flybe has chafed against. Now here comes the first promise of some relief.

    This morning, Flybe Executive Chairman Simon Laffin told me: "A weaker dollar helps our costs. Mostly we hedge for almost 12 months out, so the benefit will come in the next year or so. But, yes, it pulls back some of the increases in costs due to the fall in sterling associated with Brexit."

    Pre-tax profits for the first half of the year at the Exeter-based airline are down by two-thirds, to £7m.

    Double world champion Heather Stanning, rowing partner of Penzance's Helen Glover, ends her sporting career having not lost a single race alongside Glover since the World Championships in Slovenia in 2011.

    Their dominance in the women's pair since has extended to 39 consecutive victories and Olympic gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

    Stanning, 31, who was promoted to a major in the British Army at the beginning of the year, told BBC Sport she knew "quite quickly" after winning in Rio that she would not be competing in Tokyo 2020.

    Two people who died on the A303 in Somerset last month have been named. 

    Robert and Brenda Newton, both 72 and from the Ottery St Mary area of Devon, died after a collision with a van near Buckland St Mary on 31 October. The van driver was treated at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital but released shortly afterwards.

    Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses to the collision.

    Work on a new flood defence scheme in Braunton could start in January if Devon county councillors give the green light for funding later.

    It will cost more than £500,000, but it still won't provide the higher level of protection that is usually aimed for.

    A decision is due later on who will take over the running of Cornwall's leisure centres.

    The unitary authority has been considering tenders to run the 14 centres since May and says the new leaseholder may have to pay for a backlog of repairs and maintenance.

    The day-to-day running of the centres is currently in the hands of charity Tempus Leisure, but the maintenance remains the responsibility of the council. 

    The annual bill to the authority is about £4m, and the move to find a new operator is an attempt to cut that bill to zero.

    Two-time Olympic champion Heather Stanning has announced her retirement from rowing, ending her all-conquering partnership with Cornwall rower Helen Glover.

    Stanning (pictured left), 31, and Glover became GB's first female rowers to win back-to-back Olympic golds when they retained the coxless pairs title in Rio this year. Their Olympic gold at London 2012 was the hosts' first of the Games, and also the first in British women's rowing.

    "I don't feel I've got anything else to prove to myself," said Stanning.

    Flybe has announced a fall in half-yearly profits.

    Pre-tax profits for the first half of the year at the Exeter-based airline are down by two-thirds, to £7m. The drop is partly due to the fall in sterling, which increased the cost of US dollar loans on aircraft. 

    Flybe said the aviation market was tough but that it was confident of its resilience.

    The company's chief executive, Saad Hammad, stepped down unexpectedly last month after three years in the role.
