    Nearly 1,000 people have signed a petition opposed to a controversial new route for one of the main trunk roads into Devon.

    County councillors are today likely to approve the route on the A30 east of Honiton, which will go through the Blackdown Hills. 

    Supporters said it was vital for business and tourism. But opponents argued it would ruin an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

    Drivers who rediscovered a shipwreck at the same spot a similar wreckage was filmed for the BBC TV drama Poldark have been praised by Historic England for "ensuring the story of the site is not lost".

    The remains of the Schiedam, which sank in the 17th Century, were first found off the coast of Cornwall in 1971 but then buried under shifting sands. Divers David Gibbins and Mark Milburn made the find after many attempts at Gunwalloe Church Cove.

    The makers of Poldark - which follows the life of Ross Poldark at the Cornish tin mines after returning from the American War of Independence - filmed the shipwreck scene in the summer of 2014.

    The Schiedam, part of a fleet carrying ordnance, tools, horses and people back from Tangier, sank in 1683.

    One person has been rescued from a burning building in Teignmouth, firefighters say, external

    Three fire crews went to the property on the Den Promenade at about 18:55 on Tuesday. They carried the person from the building, who was suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke. An ambulance was called as a precaution. 

    The fire was out by 20:00.

    A Scottish sheriff said last week there was was a "very definite association between Buckfast and violence". 

    The abbey said it was "saddened" by the "judge's opinion" that a "small number of people in Scotland are not enjoying Buckfast in a responsible way".
