    Police are looking for witnesses to an attempted knife-point robbery in Ilfracombe in which a local man in his 40s, was cut on his face.

    He was walking home on Tarry Lane on Friday night when he was confronted by three men aged between 18 and 22, who demanded his wallet and mobile phone.

    Anyone who may have seen the men or anything suspicious at the time is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police, external.

    Police have released images of a number of people they want to identify in connection with a large-scale fight in Exeter in the early hours of New Year's Eve.

    A number of people were taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital following the fight outside Natwest in the High Street, including a 24-year-old local man with a suspected fractured eye socket and vertebrae.

    England winger Jack Nowell has the ability to be selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand, says Exeter head coach Rob Baxter.

    Nowell has impressed for Exeter since returning from injury in December.

    "I hope he can maintain this form and drive himself into the England side," Baxter told BBC Radio Devon. "Then show form in a very good England set of performances in the Six Nations and he gives himself a fantastic opportunity to go on a Lions tour."

    Nowell, 23, has won 18 England caps and was part of the side which whitewashed Australia on tour in the summer of 2016.

    Police and Dartmoor search and rescue teams - including diving specialists - are at Burrator Reservoir, looking for a cyclist who went missing at the weekend.

    The search was called off as light faded yesterday but has resumed this morning.

    The 30-year-old man was reported missing from Plympton. Police have not yet released his name.

    More than 5,000 operations were cancelled in the South West last year on the same day they were due to take place - a rise of about third in five years, the BBC can reveal.

    Richard Kerr, from the Royal College of Surgeons, external, says there's potential for the condition of patients waiting for operations for serious conditions to deteriorate while they wait for them to be rescheduled.

    However, NHS England, external says the level of cancellations remains low at just 1% of the millions of operations performed nationally every year.

    Firecrews were called to a suspected arson attack at the Crossways Shopping Centre in Paignton overnight.

    Officers found the fire on the upper floor of a gym and said it was caused by electrical items and rubbish.

    Part of the roof has been destroyed.

    The man has been charged with attempted murder and is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates' Court later.

    Devon and Cornwall Police spent more than £1m on a counter-terrorism operation it was directed to carry out by the Metropolitan Police. 

    Chair of the Police Federation in Devon and Cornwall, which represents rank and file officers, Nigel Rabbitts, said: “This spending on a national policing operation has to be returned to Devon and Cornwall for policing needs here."

    Exeter

    The Freedom of Information response revealed searches of woodland, and guarding the area, near Exeter, last year, cost more than £1.1m. Devon and Cornwall Police told us they were, "confident they will be reimbursed".
