  6. Care homes 'struggle with debt'published at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Carys Edwards
    Correspondent, BBC Spotlight

Despite fees of hundreds of pounds a week per resident, research suggests one in four care homes in the South West is at risk of closure or in need of rescuing, with many struggling with high levels of debt and low profits.

Analysis of accounts of care home operators at Companies House, carried out for the BBC, says the returns don't justify the risk for many.

    Nick Hood

Nick Hood (pictured), who carried out the research, said: "Too many of them make little or no profit. Those that borrow money borrow too much, and the problem is where is the incentive to stay in this business, and provide the increased capacity that we all know is coming as the baby boom generation ages."

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

As part of Cornwall Council's new strategy for tackling air pollution, one of the options would see the compulsory purchase of homes in areas with particularly poor air quality, with residents relocated to somewhere with a healthier atmosphere.

But which areas could be affected?

Put simply, we don't know. Cornwall Council said there was no specific area in question, and "further work is required before a final decision could be taken".

    Map of Cornwall with AQMAs

What we do know is that Cornwall has seven Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs), including the Kerrier area, which combines Camborne, Pool and Redruth.

All seven areas have been singled out for the pollutant nitrogen dioxide, which is associated with respiratory problems, lung disease, and cancer.
