    After a dry and frosty start to the day for some, sunny spells will start to develop through the morning, but showers will also start to push in from the west, with some heavy bursts and possibly some hail and thunder.

    More needs to be done to tackle the growing menace caused by seagulls in Devon and Cornwall's coastal towns and cities, a South West MP says.

    Oliver Colvile wants to see new buildings "seagull proofed" to prevent the birds from nesting.

    "We've got to make sure that when we build new buildings that we make it possible for seagulls to be discouraged," the Conservative MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, external said.

  5. Person trapped in car in flood water rescuedpublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    A person trapped in a car in flood water has been rescued.

    Fire crews were called to Halvasso, Longdowns, in Cornwall on Monday evening.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the person had driven the car into the water, not realising how deep it was. They were unable to get out of the vehicle. 

    Crews attended and winched the car to safety. The person's condition is not known.

    Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons says one in six inmates feel unsafe at Channings Wood in Devon.

    The comments follow an unannounced inspection of the jail, which was found to have deteriorated significantly.

    Chief inspector Peter Clarke says during the inspection inmates said they didn't feel safe and violence and drug use had increased. In addition, he says there were "significant" gaps in senior management posts.

    In response to the critical report, the National Offender Management Service says experienced leaders have been appointed to support the governor and additional prison officers have been recruited.

    • The B3311 in Cornwall is partially blocked between Nancledra and Gulval following an accident
    • Also in Cornwall, on the A38 from Trerulefoot heading towards Plymouth there's slow moving traffic
    • In the Glynn Valley the A38 westbound is closed for roadworks between the Trago Mills superstore and Drift Lane, with the A390 diversion route busy

    A teenager who went missing from her home in Saltash last week has been found safe and well

    Celeste Smith, 19, was spotted on Plymouth Hoe on Monday afternoon after being missing since last Tuesday, police confirmed. 

    People from Saltash organised a search of the area, handing out flyers to passers by and police treated her disappearance as a "high priority"

    Building 1,500 homes on the former Plymouth Airport site could create thousands of construction jobs over the next few years, its leaseholder, Sutton Harbour Holdings, external, claims

    The city airport closed in December 2011 after the operators said it was no longer viable.

    Sutton Harbour Holdings holds a 150-year lease for the site, but Plymouth City Council, external provided it with   legal protection until 2021 for any future aviation use.  

    Its Plym Vale development plans, which it claims will create 350 construction jobs a year for the next 10 years, will be considered by the council.

    Channings Wood is a prison in decline according to a report by the chief inspector of prisons.

    The report of an unannounced inspection into the prison in Devon found it was struggling to cope, while safety has deteriorated. 

    Peter Clarke says at its last inspection in 2012 the prison was performing reasonably well but now levels of violence and use of force have increased. 

    The National Offender Management Service, says it recognises that immediate action must be taken to improve safety and reduce violence.
