    Campaigners in Cornwall say they're remaining positive despite reports the government won't impose a 5p deposit on plastic bottles.

    Surfers Against Sewage told the BBC it has 200,000 signatures in support of the charge.

    But earlier this week, Downing Street was criticised by environmental campaigners for not appearing to support the idea.

    The parents of a terminally ill boy from Devon have thanked a benefactor who funded a specially adapted car to allow him to travel to medical appointments.

    Two-year-old Stanley Murphy suffers from Tay-Sachs disease, external. His parents, from Newton Abbot in Devon, had applied for funding to buy a car capable of carrying a wheelchair under the Disability Living Allowance mobility scheme. But their bid was rejected because of Stanley being too young to qualify.

    His parents said they needed a specially adapted car to take him out but warned he may not live until the funding threshold of three years old. The Department of Work and Pensions previously said it cannot make exceptions.

    There were many offers of help when BBC Spotlight featured Stanley and his vehicle has now arrived.

    The South West had the lowest rate of teenagers applying to university, according to new figures.

    Researchers analysed data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS, external) on 18 year olds applying this year.

    • Northern Ireland had the highest application rate, at 48%
    • In England the average was 37%, with London the highest region at 47% and the South West the lowest at 32%

    Almost three-quarters of beaches in the UK are littered with tiny plastic "nurdles", a survey suggests.

    The lentil-sized pellets are used as a raw material to make plastic products. A search of 279 shorelines between Shetland and the Scilly Isles found 205 (73%) had industrial pellets on them.

    They can cause damage to such wildlife as birds and fish, which eat them.

    The largest number recorded were found at Widemouth Bay, Cornwall, where 33 volunteers collected some 127,500 pellets found on a 100-metre stretch of beach.

    A motorcyclist has died in a crash on the A38 near Avonwick last night.

    Police said the motorcyclist was believed to have been riding in a group of three on the A38 in an easterly direction when one man fell from his motorcycle.  

    Emergency services were called at about 21:30 after a Honda Civic, travelling in the same direction, crashed with the motorcyclist who had fallen, officers said.

    The road was closed for six hours. A 49-year-old man from the Brixham area was pronounced deceased at the scene.

    East Devon District Council has started its tender process for a scheme to protect Sidmouth's east beach where there have been successive cliff falls.

    As part of the process, consultants will be asked to look at various options involving additional groynes, shingle replenishment and offshore breakwaters that could cost millions of pounds.

    A man from Cornwall has told the BBC how he was drugged and abused whilst a child patient at a psychiatric hospital.

    Justin Stubbings is one of almost 100 former patients from Aston Hall in Derbyshire whose cases are now being investigated by the police. 

    He says the abuse was carried out by Dr Kenneth Milner who worked at the hospital for 30 years. Medical records show Justin was injected with sodium amytal - described as a truth drug. Dr Milner retired in 1975 and died shortly after.
