    Fire crews in Exeter are dealing with a blaze which has broken out at a recycling centre.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted to the fire in Exton Road, in the Marsh Barton area, at about 09:10. Firefighters said they found an open top storage container well alight when they arrived 

    Witnesses have reported large plumes of smoke.

    The RSPB has welcomed a campaign to protect nesting swans on a lake in Cornwall that includes the use of security guards.

    The guards are being hired to protect nesting swans during Helston's Flora Day, which attracts thousands to the town every May.

    The event coincides with swans nesting at Coronation Lake, which can disturb the birds.

    Tony Whitehead, from the RSPB, said community efforts to resolve wildlife issues was commendable.

    A teenager has life-threatening injuries after a car hit a tree in Torquay, police say.

    Officers said, external the 18-year-old woman was a passenger in a Ford Fiesta travelling towards Meadfoot Beach when it left Ilsham Road at about 19:15 on Tuesday. She was taken to hospital in Plymouth with serious head injuries. 

    The male driver, a 21-year-old man from Torquay, and second passenger, a 20-year-old man from Paignton, both suffered shock but were otherwise uninjured. 

    The road was closed for around nine hours for an investigation. Police have appealed for witnesses.

    The price of a proper Cornish pasty is going up because of Brexit and dairy inflation, business leaders say.

    The slump in the value of the pound has pushed up the price of imported ingredients, including butter and wheat. It's made some businesses in the South West question the strength of the government's deals with countries outside the EU.

    Exports have got cheaper, which is good news for those selling abroad. The government wants to encourage more of this, as it prepares for Brexit negotiations.

    The president of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, Toby Parkins, said businesses need to stay positive.

    Plans to replace Exeter's Heavitree Road police station will still go ahead despite Devon and Cornwall Police losing a legal battle with the supermarket giant Morrisons, the chief executive of the police commissioner's office says.

    The force has been left with a £20m hole in its budget after losing the legal battle. The retailer had signed a contract to build a major new store on land at police headquarters, at Middlemoor in Exeter. But Morrisons failed to begin building work on their store, triggering the legal process, which the retailer won.

    Heavitree Road police station

    The £20m was earmarked to build a new police station and custody suite at Middlemoor, replacing the ageing Heavitree Road police station in the city centre.

    The chief executive of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Andrew White, told the BBC the "police station to replace Heavitree Road will still go ahead. We’ve been planning for this possibility and will find money from our reserves to fund it."

    New firefighting technology is being introduced across Devon and Somerset after it helped stop a major city centre blaze from spreading.

    Fog nails were used in fighting the fire at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter last week.

    They use high pressure water to create a dense mist, dousing a fire.

    All Devon and Somerset’s 85 fire stations will now be equipped with them.

    The National League has confirmed that control of Torquay United Football Club has been transferred to Riviera Stadium Limited.

    Gaming International (GI), under the subsidiary firm Riviera Stadium Limited,  agreed a deal to buy the club before Christmas.  However, the deal was not ratified by the National League at its board meeting in January, as some had hoped it would be. 

    The club said the change of ownership was "ratified by the board of the National League at a board meeting on Thursday 23 February, and we have now received confirmation of that decision".

    The takeover ends months of speculation about the future of the Gulls, who were facing financial difficulties.

    Devon and Cornwall Police have been left with a £20m hole in their budget after losing a legal battle with the supermarket giant Morrisons, the BBC has learnt.

    The retailer had signed a contract to build a major new store on land at police headquarters, at Middlemoor in Exeter.

    The money was earmarked to build a new police station and custody suite at Middlemoor, replacing the ageing Heavitree Road police station in the city centre.

    But Morrisons failed to begin building work on their store, triggering a legal battle.
