    A former Royal Marine who shot an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan is due to be sentenced later today after his murder conviction was overturned. 

    Alexander Blackman, 42, from Taunton, Somerset, had his conviction quashed by five judges at the Court Martial Appeal Court earlier this month.

    His initial murder charge was replaced with a verdict of manslaughter on the grounds of "diminished responsibility".

    HMS Ocean returns

    HMS Ocean, is back at Devonport after six months on operational duty.

    The crew of more than 500 personnel, including members of 820 Naval Air Squadron RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall and Lima Company of 42 Commando Royal Marines from Plymouth, are being reunited with their family and friends. 

    During this tour the Royal Navy's flagship has covered more than 23,000 miles and visited 11 countries.

    Goods vehicles across Devon and Cornwall will be stopped and checked by police over the weekend. 

    Operation Fatigue aims to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy, loads are secure and driving standards and driver's hours are within the law. 

    The police say they will target both national and foreign-based vehicles. 

    Co-ordinator of the operation Motor Patrol Constable Richie Room said: 

    “Commercial drivers can now be issued with substantial roadside fines, which in the case of foreign-based drivers will need to be paid on the road side before they are allowed to continue.”

    Fatigue will be focusing on the main A30, A38, A303 and M5 areas.

    The Isles of Scilly Council says a number of people have been in touch offering to work or provide accommodation for staff working at the islands only care home. 

    Earlier this week residents at Park House were told the home would shut in two months because of a recruitment crisis. 

    Since then the council says it has received offers of support to help sustain the residential services. 

    It says there is still no guarantee the homes future will be protected but Aisling Hicks, the director of social services says she feels the situation is now, "a lot more promising".

  8. Man arrested after Penzance gun incidentpublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2017

    An 18-year-old man from Penzance has been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

    It follows a major armed police operation in Penzance yesterday afternoon, when police were told of a man with what looked like a handgun. It turned out to be a BB gun.

    Four men were searched, and one of them arrested. He remains in police custody.

    • In St Day we've got reports the traffic lights at the crossroads are stuck on red.

    Firefighters had to rescue a child who was locked in a house in Beacon near Camborne last night. 

    The parent was locked out at around 19:00. 

    The child was still inside. 

    The fire brigade had to use a ladder to climb through a window.

    Devon and Cornwall police are concerned for the welfare of a 43-year-old woman who was last seen at around 10:00 GMT in the Axminster area.

    Karen Wyatt is described as about 5ft 1in tall, of petite build and with short black hair. 

    She is believed to be driving a Blue Toyota HiLux.

    HMS Ocean will return to her home port in Plymouth today after six months on operation. 

    More than 1,000 friends and family are expected to welcome the the Royal Navy's fleet flagship as she arrives on the jetty at Devonport. 

    During her deployment, HMS Ocean covered more than 23,000 miles and visited 11 countries.

    The Isles of Scilly Council says it hopes to recruit more staff for the island's only care home so it can stay open. 

    Earlier this week residents living at Park House were told the facility would shut in two months because not enough staff could be found to work there. 

    Families say they were angry elderly relatives were told at the beginning of the week they would have to be cared for on the mainland.

    • In Cornwal the A38 westbound Glynn Valley is closed for roadworks between the superstore and Halfway House, the A390 diversion route is busy
    • In Barnstaple on the A39 North Road there are temporary traffic lights and roadworks near the hospital, traffic is busy in the area.
    • William Prance Road in Plymouth is closed for roadworks, adding to the outbound delays on Tavistock Road and Outland Road. Traffic is also slow moving at the Manadon Roundabout.
    • There are reports of accident at Nomansland on the B3137 around the junction with the B3042.

    Conservationists say they've had more cases of dolphins and other animals around Devon and Cornwall being killed after getting caught in old fishing gear. 

    They say the increase could be down to more old nets - called ghost gear- drifting over the Atlantic from North America.

    Just recently in Falmouth Bay a dolphin was set free, yet a seal pup was found dead in fishing nets and equipment that had been lost or abandoned at sea.

    There may be some patchy rain further north, but by mid-afternoon it will become dry and also brighter from the east with some late sunshine possible for eastern parts.

    Devon and Cornwall Police have posted pictures showing flowers and a card that have been sent to them in the aftermath of the terror attack in London.

    A police officer, PC Keith Palmer was among four people who were killed by an attacker in Westminster on Wednesday. The attacker also died.

    A former Royal Marine who had a murder conviction reduced to manslaughter, is due to be sentenced today.

    Alexander Blackman, 42, has already served three years of a life sentence. 

    Last week, five judges ruled the original conviction was unsafe because of his mental state. 

    Instead they found him guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
