A van driver has been described as a "very lucky young man indeed" by police after being thrown from his vehicle in a crash which caused a traffic standstill on the M5 in Devon.

Traffic on the south-bound carriageway was affected when the van hit the central reservation near Junction 28, Cullompton, this morning.

Officers from the Devon & Cornwall and Dorset joint roads policing teams said the driver was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed. The front of his vehicle was seriously damaged.

He suffered "minor bruising only" and was "lucky to be alive", they added. The motorway has been reopened.

Devon and Cornwall Police said they were looking to trace three men: one in his late teens, the others in their early to mid-30s, who were believed to be travelling around the area in a blue van.

A stalwart of the South West newspaper scene is relaunching this weekend after a financial crisis forced it to close briefly.

In its 20th Century heyday, the Sunday Independent, was a noted training ground in Plymouth for Fleet Street reporters.

But, like many newspapers, the Indy - which provides in-depth coverage of local sport - went on to suffer circulation decline as internet competition began to bite.

Today, it's in smaller offices in Liskeard, with a circulation of about 12,000 copies a week. It has been bought by Peter Masters, who also co-owns Truro City Football Club.
