    Investigations are under way into what caused a fire at Rick Stein's Porthleven restaurant's bin store in the early hours of this morning.

    Fire crews from Helston, Tolvaddon and Mullion were involved in bringing the blaze under control at the harbourside building. No one was injured.

    Roger Langmead, who lives nearby, said: "We woke up and there was a lot of smoke billowing around and, soon after, there was a lot of embers coming up, so we were a little bit concerned.

    "We closed all the windows and and packed our bags with our precious items in case we had to evacuate."

    The 18-year-old who died after falling from a statue in Exeter has been named locally as Tom Callaway, from the Exeter area.

    The teenager was climbing on the 15ft (4.5m) General Redvers Buller statue when he fell.

    His friend Will Squier said on Facebook: "I can't believe that you've gone, at only 18 years old as well.

    "Never take life for granted people, live your life to the absolute fullest like this guy did."

    A motorcycle rider has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries in a road crash in east Devon, police say.

    Offices said the Triumph motorcycle and a van collided on the A3052 at Heathfield Cross, Westhayes, near Colyford, at about 15:55 on Sunday, after the van came on to it from a minor road.

    The rider is in a critical condition. Police have appealed fo witnesses.

    The election watchdog is looking into thousands of votes not being included in the result for a newly-elected Labour MP in Plymouth, it has confirmed,

    Luke Pollard won Plymouth Sutton and Devonport with 23,808 votes. However, the actual figure including the missed votes cast in his favour was 27,283 after missing votes from the Efford and Lipson ward were counted.

    Ballot boxes

    The Electoral Commission said: "The commission is aware of reports of electoral administrative problems in Plymouth and is in contact with the electoral officers who are responsible for delivering the election in the area.

    "We will be reporting on the administration of the polls and will carefully consider these reports as part of that process."

    Plymouth City Council said an "error in a spreadsheet" meant that more than 6,100 votes from Efford and Lipson "were not included in the final declaration sheet for the Plymouth Sutton and Devonport constituency".

    A spokesman added: "We are very sorry that this error has happened."

    Rick Stein's restaurant in Porthleven, which was hit by a fire believed to have started in a bin store, is thought to have only suffered some smoke damage, his company says.

    The company added: "Our team are in Porthleven at the moment assessing the damage, but we believe it to only be smoke damage in the restaurant. We can confirm that the restaurant was empty and most importantly no one was injured.

    "We are currently looking into the cause and hope to reopen our doors very soon."

    Devon County Council has begun a public consultation into proposals to improve the North Devon Link Road.

    The council said it was putting forward a scheme option to upgrade the route between South Molton and Bideford, "to widen the existing road to provide more overtaking opportunities, improve the junctions and create additional capacity around the urban area of Barnstaple".

    If approved, it could cost £250m.

    People can contribute to the consultation until 28 July 2017, external.

    A veteran yachtsman whose boat was severely damaged during a hurricane in the Atlantic said he dealt with the worst conditions he had ever faced.

    Luxury ocean liner the Queen Mary 2 rescued solo sailor Mervyn Wheatley, 73, who issued a mayday on Saturday. A massive storm, which saw 15m waves and hurricane-force winds, left his racing yacht and others in trouble.

    Mr Wheatley, from Newton Ferrers near Plymouth, who was competing in a transatlantic race, external, said the waves "were huge".

    He said: "I was asleep when we went over and there was a massive amount of water coming in."

    However, he added that was not frightened during the experience.

    "I was too busy trying to sort things out to get worried or frightened," he said.
