Neil Gallacher, Business & Industry Correspondent
    BBC Spotlight

As the first new generation intercity train arrives in Penzance, our Business Correspondent has been answering some questions about the new vehicles.

    • How fast do they go?

The maximum speed of the new trains is 100mph, and that's only where the line permits.

    • How much more capacity do they have?

They have longer carriages - 36 metres instead of 33 - and different use of space will mean 20% more seating. There are 647 seats in the bigger trains with 326 in the five-coach ones.

    Train
    • How much shorter are the journey times?

Improved acceleration is the key to the improvement in journey times. Up to six minutes shaved off the time to Exeter and Plymouth from Paddington, and a full 14 minutes quicker to Penzance.

    • When will we see these new trains in service?

From 2017 this new fleet of Intercity Express Trains will connect London Paddington to Bristol and South Wales, and from 2018 they will connect London Paddington to Exeter, Plymouth, Penzance and many more communities.

Students at ISCA Academy in Exeter complained of "sweltering" temperatures earlier in the week.

They say they were told - humorously - they could wear skirts instead, which sparked the idea for the protest.

The skirts were borrowed from girls at Isca.

    Quote Message

We recognise that the last few days have been exceptionally hot and we are doing our utmost to enable both students and staff to remain as comfortable as possible. Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families. However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future."
