  8. MP questions value of EU fundingpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Johnny O'Shea
    BBC News Online

MP Scott Mann says Cornwall can be better served with funding coming from Westminster, rather than Brussels.

New figures show Cornwall may not actually have been poor enough to justify getting £1bn of European funding over the past 15 years.

About £1bn has been spent on projects including Falmouth University and the Eden Project.

Mr Mann told BBC Radio Cornwall: "There's very little that the man in the street would say European money has helped them in their day to day lives."

    Scott Mann

"As we move forward, the European money won't be there, there will be a replacement and that will be UK based.

"I'm not suggesting that EU funding hasn't built buildings in Cornwall. All I'm suggesting is that it hasn't trickled down and been seen in people's pockets in Cornwall. I think a much more tailored approach from central government to ensure that money gets where it's needed will be better for the UK."
