    Andrew Segal
    Local Live

If Torbay's elected mayor resigns, the move could cost the area "tens of thousands of pounds, the area's MP claims.

Gordon Oliver is facing calls to quit after a majority of his Conservative councillors supported a vote of no confidence in him last week. He has until 10:00 to stand down, but has said he intends to serve out the rest of his term.

Torbay Conservative MP Kevin Foster said that, if Mr Oliver did resign, it may cause unnecessary upheaval in Torbay.

He said: "If Gordon wrote a letter at 09:30 resigning, we'd end up with a by-election later this year for an elected mayor - that's how the law currently stands.

"We'll end up spending tens of thousands of pounds for someone to be mayor for just over a year until the post is abolished in May 2019."

  5. Villagers 'to fight latest luxury houses and apartments plans'published at 09:34 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    BBC Radio Devon

    Lee Bay

Locals in the village of Lee on the North Devon coast say they'll fight the latest plans to build 23 luxury houses and apartments there.

The proposed homes, arranged in three blocks, could be built on the site of an old hotel in a prime seafront location.

A previous application to redevelop the Lee Bay Hotel site, near Ilfracombe, into homes was refused by North Devon Council last year because of concerns about the impact on the local area.

Some villagers also said they were concerned the properties would just end up as "expensive holiday homes".

Developer Acorn Blue said the scale and feel of the new scheme after a redesign was in keeping with Lee Bay and reflected the character of its conservation area.

  7. Speedboat deaths widow 'returns to accident site every time she visits'published at 09:06 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

    Victoria Milligan

A widow says she returns to the Cornish spot where her husband and daughter died in a catastrophic speedboat accident every time she visits the county.

Victoria Milligan lost a leg in the accident in Padstow in May 2013. Her husband, 51-year-old Nick, and eight-year-old daughter Emily were killed, and their three other children were also injured.

Visiting Cornwall to speak to members of bereavement charity Cruse, Mrs Milligan said she'd been encouraged by the success of campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of so-called kill cords on speed boats.

The cords are attached to a boat's pilot and make the engine cut out if they are thrown overboard.

In 2014, the inquest was told Mrs Milligan, who had been trained in using a powerboat, was not wearing a kill cord which would have stopped the engine when they were thrown overboard.
